One of these days.....
We will reach maximum players.

We've had a full table many times, but that was when I was teaching at an alternative school and ran game nights for students. I'm now married and under a massive workload at a different school. All my awesome gaming brothers have similar situations (partners, high pressure, time consuming jobs) and it is very rare that six adults will sit together at the table. One day, it will happen.

Very good choice. It is one of my favorites. I love the bidding, diplomacy and especially the orders.

I've had the game for some time, and the other night we brought it back ot the table for the first time in years.

The experience was a bit meh. It felt like the diplomacy part played too big a role. In every move you have to consider possible political implications, and that basically turns it into a negotiationfest (is that even a word? well, now it is.).

I don't mind diplomacy and intrigue, but I prefer slightly more longterm alliances, like in The Napoleonic Wars (2nd Edition), Napoleon in Europe, and to some degree Twilight Imperium (third edition). Also the more abstract and mechanical approach in Struggle of Empires works fine for me.

I like this more than you do, but thumbs up for "negotiationfest"!

I really like this one too - I find the different combat strengths of the units combined with the order system and leader cards actually allow for some interesting game play, allowing even an outnumbered player to do some fancy maneuvering.

I personally love the Second Edition of this game, and wouldn't change it in the least. However, if I could go back and have these games now redone as block games, it would rock my socks off. The theme (IMHO) is a very large and engaging world within the Ice and Fire series; one which I would recommend to all.

Personally, I would just love a block war game made out of this, with similar gameplay as Battles of Westeros, but with more of the Fog of War aspect. I can only imagine the scenarios would rock as well.

Pretty much the same thing as with The War of The Ring. I ended up buying a copy as soon as I could when the reprint came out.

Unfortunately I haven't played it yet to try and list the differences - if any. Regardless, not a "new release".

I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume you saw A Game of Thrones: The Card Game and not this one. This is the first edition that preceded the recently released A Game of Thrones: The Board Game (Second Edition).

But yes, it would certainly be nice to see the card game thrifted too!

This plus expansions is FOTW if not Year material, congrats!

Scorecard for the Week/Month/Year as of 10Mar2012:

13/21/96 plays of 6/10/52 total games, with 4/5/15 expansions employed.
Plays with 16/21/55 distinct opponents.

5/5/8 games acquired (plus 2/2/3 expansions.) (Owned and previously played: Outpost and The Castles of Burgundy; newly played this week: Timeline: Inventions; unplayed expansions: Power Grid: The Robots and The Castles of Burgundy: New Player Boards. And the two unplayed games I mention below.)

With the I've been Diced! guys:
1x _6.7_ Bongo! - Not a complete game; it was a momentary diversion. Still, the other guys needed to talk Paul down from requesting Yet Another Roll...
1x _7.3_ A Game of Thrones plus ports from Clash of Kings - This was our main event for the evening. The game was a more static affair than I remember seeing in the past: part of that may have been the event card draw (we went several turns without a muster, leaving us with subjectively-insufficient forces to do much damage.) It was entertaining, but the end-game proved less compelling than I've seen in the past. In fact, had this been my first game, I might well have rated it poorer: since it isn't, though, I'm willing to forgive. (On that front, though: I wonder how many other games I've rejected on an initial randomly-poor showing? Several, I imagine.)
1x _10_ Race for the Galaxy plus three expansions - We used to play a lot of this - though not so much after the third expansion came out (While it entertains me a good deal, I think we weren't universally sold on the Prestige subsystem.)

With my family:
1x _8_ Outpost - With my boys. This one was provoked by the enthusiasm of son #2. Son #1 doesn't much like exponential growth games - he prefers things where the decisions are a bit more subtle. Still, he was kind to participate to amuse his little brother.
1x _7_ Timeline: Inventions New! - The same boys - but this one worked a bit better. Even if both weren't nearly lucid due to fever. Fortunately, I'd tweaked the starting hands to leave us roughly even in the end!
1x _7_ Timeline: Inventions - This one with my wife. She thought it was pretty cute. Though whether that means she'd play again isn't clear at all.

With the no-longer-on-Fridays gamers:
1x _7_ Alea Iacta Est - Worked pretty nicely. In retrospect - given how beat up the cheatsheet that describes the set of SPQR cards in detail is - I'm surprised they chose to make that of flimsy paper, rather than something more substantial. I wonder a bit whether I'll ask the same thing of Ora et Labora in a year or two!
For me, it was interesting to compare with The Castles of Burgundy: both are a do-the-best-one-can with dice thing. This one is dramatically more trivial - though possibly more accessible as a result. I don't think any of my new-player colleagues felt shortchanged by the experience. It wasn't significant, either, of course: Ben wouldn't have liked it. But then again, I'd be surprised if The Castles of Burgundy would work well for him, too.

With the friday night youngsters:
1x _6.7_ Bongo! - First time with the Game Warden cube. It's harmless and teaches easily.
1x _7_ Timeline: Inventions - This one is similar in terms of "ease of explanation" - but definitely fires a different set of neurons. I may be over-rating it at this point; we'll see how it holds up over time.

Owned-and-unplayed: 24 (+2 for this week: I added Hoax and Seeland to the pile this week.)

Outlook for the week: Flying to Ireland this week. I'll be there long enough to miss DJ & Tom. Not clear what is in my immediate gaming future - though it's possible that the Ireland board of Ora et Labora might happen next weekend...

Some of both! I'm in Dublin for business - but I'm planning to take the train down to Cork for St. Paddy's day to visit with my brother & his family. Hence the hope that we might get to try the Ireland board of Ora. My brother tells me his youngsters are playing mostly Chicago Express, Puerto Rico, and Automobile - and any of those three will work nicely for me, too. I may need to jam my copy of South African Railroads in my suitcase to see how the youngsters survive it...

Many thanks for asking! Trip to Ireland was mostly uneventful (well, it could have been eventful, when the initial flight was delayed by 65 minutes, given the plan to change terminals, go through security twice, and walk a couple kilometers in a 100 minute layover at Heathrow. But, inexplicably and delightfully, the plane decided to land in the terminal that I needed to get to - rather than the initially scheduled different one - so that the changeover was feasible. St. Patrick's day in Cork is fun; it's 11:30PMish here, and the party is just getting started outside my window

The countryside of Ireland is really pretty (though admittedly buildings run a larger variance from new and modern, through old and pretty, to old and decrepit than the ones I'm used to in California.) Food is excellent, too.

On the game front, I've managed to play a few things with nephews and niece: so I'll have something to report next week, too!

I LOVE this game, but it's hard to find the time to play it. My normal game group is willing to play it every couple of months or so, which is good but I'd love to play it more. So I look forward each year to going to a local gaming con because I know I can always find a group willing to put in the time to play it and am guaranteed at least one game of it while I am there. But this year though my experience at the con was almost enough to make hang up my Valyrian Steel for good.

The group that agreed to play with me ended up being made up of 3 brand new players who had never played it and 1 who had played it a few times before. I had to explain all of the rules to everyone and, so that the game would be better, I added in some strategic points to help them out (see how powerful your navy is, watch out for chokepoints, etc.) this took a while but I was willing to do it to get a game going. The game starts and the group does what a lot of new players tend to do when faced with a complex game with lots of decisions: they attack the most experienced player, me. To be fair, I did some attacking too, but anyone who could attack me did. I took it in stride at first, I mean you gotta be ready to be attacked if you play this game, but they were ruthless--throwing swords at every contest and my Baratheon card stock didn't let me counter enough of these. So by turn 5, I was almost wiped off the board (4 units and 2 ships left) and an unchecked Lannister has amassed 5 castles--even though I was warning everyone about this and reminding them that attacking me made no tactical sense anymore because I was no longer a threat. Finally the somewhat experienced player decides to ease up on me and join me trying to stop Lannister, but the other 2 players continue to attack me and now my new ally. When I asked why they were doing this, one says because she and Lannister had a truce--I reminded her that there is no second place, only one winner but this did not stop her. The other says that he was attacking me since I had attacked him back in round one, I reminded him that he had returned the favor in every round since then and that killing me again had no tactical value--he didn't care. One turn later, Lannister wins. This is one of the few times that I have actually gotten angry while playing a game and was ready to sign off on playing AGoT ever again, but upon reflection I have decided never to play AGoT with Noobs again.

I don't think I'd ever play games I care deeply about at a con. Some games just need to be played with the right group or they are ruined. Cons for me are all about discovering new games.

I don't disagree. The mistake, in the end, was mine. I wanted a good game. They wanted to learn the game. They were doing what noobs tend to do (except ignoring my advice about how not to lose the game). It was a big time commitment for me (teaching the rules and playing 6 rounds took about 2.5 hours) for little to no enjoyment for me. I did feel it was a bit rude however to ask a guy to teach you the game and then try to eliminate him from the game when doing so gives you no real tactical advantage and won't propel you to victory. But learned my lesson: when I want to play AGoT, what I really want is to play with experienced players, not noobs.

On a related note, a buddy of mine had a very similar problem with Battlestar. He took the time to teach the game to a mixed group that contained experience and new players. They start the game and then in like the 2nd round when one of the new players was accused for the first time of being a cylon, the guy reveals himself as a cylon--without even trying to deny the accusation. Sure, the game has a mechanic to keep it going after this, but my buddy said the rest of the game was long, slow and terrible because half of the fun of it is trying to figure out who the cylon is.

Not wanting to drive the threat too much off topic: I had the same experience some time ago when trying to teach others Republic of Rome. I didn't have the slightest chance to convince them to share the offices with me and not to ignore me completely during the senate phase. After a few rounds it usually was over. This is in no way satisfying when you sacrificed one hour to teach them the basics of the game and one example round of play only to see them jumping down the cliff without a parachute.
Needless to say they complained loud after hitting the ground hard. Other games like Mighty Empires, lead to the same result.

Now I'm some years older (and wiser). For me its essential to have great fun when playing, not necessarily win the game. We have the best time when all players agree on just playing and share our time together. We usually do not complain about the luck of the draw or the forging of alliances. On the other hand we do not beat others that lie on the ground because they cheated on us during a former round or they could be easily crushed like a bug or are supposed to be the experienced player that must be wiped out by all means. We play a game, nothing more.

It's the secret path to find such a group and play with those people. Hope you find them next time you play your favorite game.

Totally agree with this. Teaching a complex game to new players where there is a clear skill/information difference is never going to be easy. On the one hand, you get cases like this where they don't play the game well. On the other, do you really expect folks to assume that you are given unbiased advice when you are a player as well?

When possible I try and give heads up to the other players in my game group if I'll be playing a complex game. This could be due to rules or strategy complexity. The more they know going on about what to expect, the more that this can be limited.

Wow, I mean there is some backstabbing in AGoT, but lying to new players just so an experienced player can win seems beyond the scope and a quick way to make new players HATE playing any new game. I have never done this, nor have I ever played a game where this happened and I hope I never do. Furthermore, I don't really understand why acting like this would be fun: in my experience a close game is always more fun than a game with a runaway leader (even if that leader is me). In fact when I play a game with new players and it looks like my experience is giving me an unfair advantage, I usually "play against myself" by showing the new people how to limit/beat me so that the game stays close and everyone has more fun.

To clarify, the information that I was giving them was pretty unbaised--I pointed out the number of castles that Lannister had (5) and how many he needed to win (7) and I pointed out that in the territories I controlled (and was getting attacked in) there was only 1 castle (7 of which players need to control to win) and the other territories had either crowns or a barrel, so attacking me instead of the leader was less advantageous to them. All of this information was readily available on the board and in the rules.

This didn't meet the reserve, so here's what I'll do. The highest bidder was offered my compromise of $32. If anyone else would be interested in this price, say so, and I'll go in order, starting with senorcoo (waiting to hear back from him), and first to claim it, gets it!

I have played this one by forum. Takes a few weeks to play per game but still very good in this format.

Thanks Kent! I've been very interested in A Game of Thrones since I heard it was like Diplomacy... Are there any key differences between the two?
