Almost passed on this, but I took a second look and something hit me. I know this game. well, I KNEW this game when I was a kid. I actually HAD this game then. It struck me that this was a game that I owned and played often. I liked this game. I have no idea whatever happened to my copy. Well, now I have it again! It was $1 (Hope it's still fun).

Ryan, that's an interesting set of microbadges. Either you're spelling out something that escapes me, or you've somehow become a fan of various sports teams spread throughout the U.S.

Edition pictured, $2.99 at Thift Town. One end of the box (left side) is worn, the logo on the side is ripped, and the box is water stained. Staining carries over inside onto the insert. Fortunately that's all on the side opposite all of the game components. All the bits and pieces are in perfect condition and new - everything is still on the sprues and none of the bank logs have been written in.

Looks like an interesting game, but boy opinions seem to be all over the place on it.

And the pawns...they're straight out of Disney's Haunted Mansion!

I think it is a great bluffing game; feels Euro.

EDIT: I'm thinking I need to do a Geeklist of mass-produced games that feel like Euros.

OK, is there a recognized "date" of the Euro ascendance? I'll probably just forgo the date then, but it would be helpful guidance.

I'd suggest adding the games you feel belong on the geeklist then check the dates and whatever is the latest date use that one (or add a year or two to it) and see what happens.

If you are going with Square Mile, Survive, Scotland Yard, and Conspiracy - then 1985 would be the latest date but again, add the games you think belong then go back and fill in the date

Plus, there's always going to be 'that' person who doesn't read the header and adds games beyond the cut of date anyways

I always assumed Scotland Yard qualified as a Euro. It's not economic, but it did win the SdJ, so I guess that's why I made the assumption.

Back to Conspiracy though, I passed it up once. I was torn on whether or not to buy it. I did some research after seeing it. Sounded like it might be fun, but I guess my personal thrifting philosophy sort of dictates that if it doesn't jump out and grab me- for whatever reason- then I probably shouldn't be bringing it home. I'm kinda short on space, and my wife is definitely not as enthusiastic about my thrifting hobby as I am.

Game is complete. From the looks of the pass books, it has only been played 4 times, so there are a lot of blank pages left in them. Box shows some shelf wear, has some minor tape marks on the edges, and lid is slightly dished. A nice players game.

I could also choose Container due to its austere elegance or Scotland Yard with its excellent coop deduction excitment but I will choose truly the last game that surprised me instead of the ones that blew my mind in December and January.

This game is a very odd bird. Old but an a total mind bender. Its very simple. It has an perfectly symmetrical abstract board and 8 pieces. The goal is to use on of the pieces to pick up a briefcase and bring it to your home base. You can move any of the pieces but your ability to do so is affected by how much money you secretly you allocate to each of them during the game.

I am awful at guessing the intentions and hidden actions of other players - in all games. And this game is ALL about guessing your opponents intentions and bluffs. I would not be surprised if I never win a game of this in my life, but it is great, great brainburning fun..

For a outguess/outbluff/outmaneuver your opponents type of game it is both elegant and absolutely brilliant.

This game was published in 1973, but I'm still a little surprised that I never heard about until a couple weeks ago when a gamer gave away a bunch of his unwanted games. It looked interesting and I snatched this up...we played it last week and I'm really happy I got this game.

Its a total mind bender. Completely abstract board, no luck, simple mechancis, all bluffing. A little old to be a "canonical" euro, but it sure as hell plays like one...well at least one if you wanted a eurogame that was about bluffing.

And it did get a recommendation in the 1991 SDJ.

Just played it again last night...I think its deserves being called a proto-euro. If you used player screens with wooden cubes instead of paper and pencil keeping track of the money, it would really have the components of a euro. But as it is, it feels streamlined and pared down like a euro...not too streamlined to become an abstract, but just a few moving parts that work in concert to create an interesting, thinky game.

Personally, whenever I hear of someone who has an inside contact at a thrift store, I think of that guy and I think a little less of both the store and the person who has the contact.

I have a bigger issue with the employees at the local St. Vincent's getting first dibs on the items that come in. They keep it behind the counter (where they also have more valuable items on display) until the end of their shift, then get one of the other clerks to ring them up. The stuff never has a chance to make the floor and I always wonder on the pricing.

Really bugs me when I see something and ask about it and I'm told "Oh, no, that's mine. Isn't it great?" shake

Regarding stores having 'preferential' customers, I'd be annoyed as well. But if that's the business model they want to follow then that's their choice, even if it means that they might lose me as a customer for them never having items on the shelves that interest me.

Regarding firing employees, if there are set rules of conduct for a store and an employee repeatedly transgresses those rules, or singularly transgresses a major rule, then sure, 'discipline up to and including termination' is pretty common and acceptable. In general though I balk at the kneejerk response to have someone sacked from some already low paying job just because they didn't live up to someone's concept of the ideal customer experience.

Regarding thrift stores that allow for employees to get first pick of donated items, again, that's the store's choice. My wife works for a cell phone company; we get super cheap phones and calling plans. I used to work for Borders a long time ago; we got free promo cds and books all the time on top of getting discounts on just about everything in the store and a deep discount on employee discount day. What kind of perk is the thrift store worker going to get, our smiling faces as we buy all that awesome stuff that they don't get to touch? Sure, any thrift store wouldn't want their employees pricing stacks of $100 items for $1 each then setting them aside for self purchase when they should, even by thrift store standards, be priced higher. But I could well imagine and not be offended at all by a perk program that let an employee set aside an item or three a day that were priced by a manager or someone else.

Sorry to go against everyone's grain here. If a store doesn't put something out on the shelf I like they don't get my two dollars this week. What's to complain about? It's not like they're spewing oil into the ocean and making record profits at the same time.

My "insider" is the owner of a store that sells the contents of storage units he purchases. I always give him grief about not finding the motherlode of storage units full of games. He always assures me that, "Someday..." I look forward to that day. (It helps that I've spent plenty of $$$ on other merchandise he has uncovered. Gotta keep priming the pump. laugh)

I picked this up from Hillside thrift for $2. Another game to donate to my sons 4th grade classroom.
