I absolutely love the look of the plastic molded board and pieces of the Mattel version of this arguably classic abstract. However, its incredibly short length of playtime has always limited the enjoyment of it fully for me. Getting multiple games into a 30 minute time frame burns it out fast for a few months. Honestly, I just break it out once and awhile because I love fiddling with and admiring the pieces during play.

OOOOhhhh....now THIS is nice.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's yet another Cathedral. Nothing special, right?
WRONG!
I can't find a picture to match what I have (gotta cash in on that), but I done found me a travel Cathedral set, in a wooden box with wooden pieces.
Wood is good and this is mine. Lovely.
$3 at the Salvation Army Thrift Store.

The game that springs to mind for when when I think "unforgiving" is Cathedral. One false move and you're toast.

Found this for $4. It is the polystone version. The box was closed but it felt heavy. Paid for it, opened it up, and the styrofoam looked like it hadn't been touched. Start to check it out and it looks like one piece is missing
. Wait! it is just stuck inside the styrofoam I just lifted off .
The only problem I see with this set, is the colours for the two sides are very close. Has anyone else experienced that?

The power went out at my office today (due to a fierce wind storm), so I went thrifting instead. To my surprise, I found a wooden Cathedral, complete, for $3 at the Army of Salvation. I say, 'surprise', because I just found one on Friday as well. This one will be given to a friend as a small gift. When it rains it pours, I guess.
Power is back on now. Deo gratias!
Thanks again to Meat for the photograph.

When I saw this large box, I had to pick it up. My wife has been looking at this one for a while, so it was an instant buy. I did stop to check if it had all the pieces (it did, but a few were broken - nothing a little patience & some superglue couldn't fix)
This thing is pretty heavy - over 4 lbs.
It did teach me something - I never knew that Easter Island was a part of Chile! I love that every piece is unique, and a Country only has one piece associated with it.
$4.99 at Talize.

1978 - Cathedral
Previously a 1981 contender, the revised date makes it a winner. A solid abstract strategy game that also looks good. Also playable by a wide range of ages and tastes.
Other Candidates
Pirateer - An interesting game that is poorly balanced at three players, but pretty good at two or four.
Isolation- Another good beginner pure abstract strategy game that I don't play any more. I played this quite a bit with my son in the mid-to-late 80s.
Simon - One of the early electronic games. Kind of a combination memory and dexterity game. Getting past about eight tones was usually a challenge for me. The kids played with this one some also, in the mid-to-late 80s. Not seen much time since then.
Critter In The Candy - My daughter was born in 1977, so against fairly weak competition, this game from her childhood was previously the winner. This is a decent memory game for little kids, and a Pop-o-Matic game, to boot. I have been asked several times about it, but it is not going anywhere (my daughter forbids its departure, unless it goes to her house, I suppose). It will probably be one of the first games I play with a grandchild.

The edition pictured. All of the wood bits look great and none of them needed gluing together. The packing tape keeping everything in the box even pulled up pretty cleanly. $2.92 at Value World

$15 for a lot with a number of Gigamic games (see below)
Picked up on Craigslist. The seller listed them two days ago for $30 total and then dropped to $15 yesterday. I guess he wanted to get rid of them quick! I have been looking for Cathedral (and this version in particular) but I was happy to get some of the lesser known Gigamic games too. Wasn't expecting much from them, but in the end I kept one.
