I like 'em big and meaty too, but sometimes you just want

You mean an upgrade of For the People?

To me, that's a whole different beast than AHD. I love that AHD focuses just on military matters and has no card text to fiddle with.

Come to think of it, I guess maybe I don't like strategy-level wargames that much at all. The reason I love AHD is that it plays more like a tactical game--quick and dicey and straightforward.

Maybe something in between. For the People may be too heavy to find an opponent as easy as A House Divided. I think Price of Freedom can fit the bill. But I mean what Mark can do is to something in between his own For the People and Washington's War. I always like to play his wargames. But I have yet to find the time to read the rulebook and an opponent in For the People.

$1, Hastings Goodwill.

100% complete. This is the 1st edition, as pictured.

Sometimes it pays to look at the board game section more than once. I found this game on the 2nd lookover and the above game on the 3rd lookover.

Also, it looks like this game is rarely thrifted. I've had this on my want to play list for a while, so I'm happy to have it.

Some people think it's sacrilege, others will readily do it: how do you feel about house ruling? Do you voluntarily tweak the base rules to accommodate your playing styles or tastes? Would you reject a gaming opportunity if you knew the group included house rules in the game?

I'm really suspicious about house ruling. I trust the playtesting team enough to play the game as intended. However, I'm totally for it if it can fix a flaw that was discovered after publishing (think A Few Acres of Snow).

One of my gaming group are prone to house ruling, but only in small subtle ways. For example, in Powergrid, the last player standing in the auctioning phase isn't allowed to draw a "free" card in the market. He has to choose from the 3 remaining factories. I can live with that, as long as it improves a known weakness.

We play a few house rules, but not too many:

Agricola
• Start with 10 occupations. May spend an action to draw, then discard 5 cards, mixing between occupations and minor improvements so long as the drawn distribution matches the returned distribution.

Agricola: Farmers of the Moor
• Considering the 2-player alteration discussed here.

Citadels
• The 12-card 3-player (2-player rules) version discussed previously in this GCL.

Dominion
• The game ends when provinces run out, but not colonies.
• Play continues until each player has had an equal number of (standard, non-extra) turns.

Earth Reborn
• Damage from failing to disarm a mine.

Settlers of Catan
• Randomly drawn (we own 2½ copies of the game) tiles, randomly placed.
• Often, randomly drawn production chits, randomly placed.

Shogun
• Cubes stuck in the tower are lost—no army teleportation via the dice tower.

War of the Ring
• I expect many for this, when we play it, but only from those already widely known: start in the Shire, etc. But many, many, I expect.

Wings of War
• Too many to list here: historical stats, altitude, damage. Essentially we've kept just the movement mechanic and firing concept.

Arkham Horror: The Dunwich Horror
• Roll to see which gates open—this creates some chance of the Dunwich Horror actually coming out.

I've seen people use this variant before. I've also seen people "draft" their starting hands of occupations and minors.

I'd be curious to hear the reasoning for this.

I'm unfortunately uncertain how that guy was "exploiting" and why this is necessary. All players could do this evenly. It's interesting that someone in the thread says that it can devolve the game into a cube-counting memory exercise but since cubes are finite and player supplies are open information the knowledge of how many cubes are in the tower is always evident. I still think that methodology is flawed inherently and that it would never be consistent.

More like we simply didn't like the dice tower's ability to teleport troops. Nobody exploited it as that guy claims to have; it's just an example of something we found unthematic—the tower's ability to pop up deserters on the other side of the country. That, and other players' ability to know just how much strength a particular player had coming in his next battle. It discouraged fighting, and, in addition to disliking the 'teleportation' mechanic, we preferred less incentive to hold off fighting.

Actually mentioned it above, in the 'rules you first played wrong' discussion:
HuginnGreiling wrote:
Dominion: Prosperity: Missed that buying out Colonies can also end the game. Only discovered our mistake months later. And we prefer to let only Provice buyouts trigger the game end, so we continue playing that way. It sets up a difficult choice between stocking up on Colonies or running out the Provinces.

I put off buying this for years, then bought it recently when fellow Geeks told me it was great for solitaire play. They were right!

It's even better with an opponent (I played a couple games PBEM), but solo play works well partly because of the activation rolls: you only get to move a few units each turn, so you have to be selective. Kinda like a chit-pull mechanic, except that you get to choose which units to move.

1860-1865

Sectionalism and related issues among which slavery was most prominent led to the US War Between the States or Civil War. At first, the Confederacy was seen to have the moral high ground in the conflict but from the time of Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, this perception shifted.

An entire sub-genre of games based on this war exists but I only have about three. Of those, I think this one the best.

Pretty good for how light it is.

VG's Civil War is very good.

Played For the People once, and I enjoyed,
but it's not something you can get a feel for
in one play.

From my father.

I played this one in 2009 and liked it a lot. It went on my wishlist and I almost bought it in January 2011. The dream is reality!
