I got Andy a subscription to Command Magazine for his birthday. He really enjoyed it, and we got a chance to play Kadesh. I think it was one of the best Command games. I regret that we didn't get to play more of them.

The Battle of Kadesh ~ around 1274BC

Between the Egyptians and Hitites located in modern day Syria.

Brief Summary: The battle is the result of the conquests of Ramsey II and his goal of increasing the egyptian empire to the size of the Tuthmosis kings many centuries before.

Due to a false reports says they hitites were hiding in terror of the egyptions (planted by the Hitites) Ramsey and his advanced guard seperated themselves from the egyptian main force in Ramseys urge to destroy the hitites. After torturing spies caught in his miss ramsey learns that he is about to be surrounded and destroyed by a larger hitite army he quickly orders his larger army to make haste to him. One of the divisions of that army was destroyed in there haste to rescue there pharoh while at the same time Ramseys advanced guard was under attack by hitite chariots. Facing personal death and possible capture Ramsey courageously leads multiple charges with his personal guards and some chariots against the attacking force using his lighter chariots and the eqyptian bow that had a greater distance then there opponents they tired out the hitite heavy chariots. Meawhile after routing the main egyptian force the hitites fell on the siege train and started looting and were woefully unprepaired for ramseys counter attack and were routed themselves.

This was a political but pyrhic victory for ramsey and he never captured Kadesh as planed.

It is also in the SPI PRESTAGS game Chariot.

This (or possibly Cortes: Conquest of the Aztecs, also Command) was the first hex-and-counter wargame I played that didn't have NATO symbols and black-on-single-colour counters. I barely understood that colourful counters were allowed

That's what I remember about Command magazine, they were different, colourful, and quick-play - and what I rediscover every so often, I have virtually the entire run, and still haven't played some! I still judge new games by how they shape up to Command games. Not that they were all so great - some of the new ones shape up better.

This great little game with great, but tiny counters simulates the largest clash of chariots we do know of: some 5 000 vehicles, Hittites vs Egyptians.

Let me clarifiy my complaint: Most units in this game are organized into divisons. This affiliation is not indicated by the counter's background color, but by the color of the shield the little guy is holding. At least my aging eyes find that hard to spot in the heat of battle ...

Besides that, the game plays great and allows you to conduct sweeping manoeuvres with your chariots, while random starting positions and leader activations assure replayability. This is meant as an encouragement ...

In short, it's a full upgrade of the Command game. Personally I've found the ATO magazine games to be way too complex and, especially, table heavy, but I'll give it a look.

Very good game on an interesting battle. I believe this game also inaugurated the era of widespread use of multicolored counters and graphic improvement in wargames.

There's a new Kadesh game on the way from ATO a few issues down the road.

Grahpic improvement in wargames was always an ongoing process, from the late '60s, on. Actually, graphic improvements in maps perhaps made the biggest strides in the '70s, but 16- and even 8-color printing did not become viable for the low-profit operations of wargame companies until the eighties.

Consistent with that, use of multi-color counters started becoming something more than an oddity in the early eighties, as did laser-printing, which permitted higher detail. The technology just got progressively cheaper (and thus more widespread in use), from that point forward.

For an example of earlier usage, see Omega War.

So, Command magazine Japan covers most of Command's games of Eastern front.

Well, Tushratta was King of Mitanni and the Mitanni were the Original Chariot Boyz of the Ancient Near East. I just love chariots: brazen chariots, wingéd chariots, chariots of fire, chariots that swing low. My avatar is a pic of a Mitanni chariot warrior.

XTR's Kadesh was the winner of "Best Pre-World War II Board Game" for 1990. The other nominees were Dead of Winter, Lion of Ethiopia, Mississippi Fortress, and Republic of Rome.

Kadesh also was given the award for "Best Wargaming Graphics", beating Code of Bushido, Republic of Rome, and Third Fleet.

From CONSIM

"Gem. Some of the rules were a little funky (column and leader movement) and the surprise at the camps was also messy, but a fun game. Great counters -- I wish XTR would strive to maintain that standard in artwork." JD

"Gem. I loved such an obscure topic complete with Canaanites! It did have limited replay value." TS

"The rules were somewhat confusing in places (especially the rules for camp overrun), but also the Eygptian missle capabilites was much better that the Hittes edge in melee. I'd like to see this as a GBOH game to compare." RL

"Complexity 6. Second to LoE in my affections. Great counters only spoilt by the fact that my eyesight will fail me one day. Reminds of the Command babes as well." RF

"Gem, I'm playing this with my wife right now." DW

"Played it once. Seems like a walkover for the Hittites." MP

"Beautiful counters and a very good game. Not on the quick replay list though, still it comes back out from time to time." HSD

"The counters knocked me out! But, I never could figure out how to play the game. As the Hittites my army just sort of oozed towards the Egyptians in a very weird manner. Never got past that." DF

"Fun game, but longish. The command system worked ok, with some weird effects, such as divisions forming pseudopods to continue moving while their leader is bolted to the spot. Nice to look at, but I agree the colored shields should be larger - some squinting is needed to distinguish turquoise from green units. Complexity 6." MS
