Luna — This game confused the hell out of me, although I did better than my fellow first players, and it wasn't until I was laying in bed when I could make some sense of its patterns and mechanisms. It is actually a game of careful planning not unlike later Trajan, but then with a more ruthless means to put timing stress on your fellow players. Apart from the timing candles, the moving Apostate, and the little positional plays in the temple itself, you play the game mostly on your own; and you should take full opportunity of this fact in addition to carefully taking stock where the Priestess and Master Builder end up on every turn. Once you see how this works, you can begin to explore the interlocking novice movement mechanisms, and see about getting points in addition to planning future moves.
Once I realised that, my opinion of Luna increased a few notches. It's actually quite a clever title, especially when considering it's completely open information and fully deterministic. For now what bugs me a little is that I'm not really sure there is much variety in how players eventually score points. That's a bit of a shame: there's quite a complex game of moving back and forth going on, but to what it eventually amounts is a bit... well, simplistic. Notwithstanding this, truth be told, Luna is in my opinion definitely one of the more playable Felds out there. I might even get a copy if the price is right: the current execution is lovely, but also very expensive. Perhaps in a few years' time.
Ristorante Italia — At my request we played the game with all rules save the superadvanced ones, and we noticed an immediate improvement over the barely functional base game we played at Spiel last. The addition of bonus cards and tables really solves a few nagging issues, and makes starting up the game easier because they give you a more solid financial fallback. Otherwise you'd have to rely on nothing but good card draws and ingredients, which is very frustrating.
The game's weak point is the scoring, which is opaque. It is very difficult to estimate how well someone else is doing; and the game itself doesn't really offer that much opportunity to annoy the others, too. So while RI is better with the full rules, it's still a weak title... But to play it once every while, especially after a fine Italian dinner, is certainly not a punishment. Just don't take it all that seriously, and you'll be fine.
Glenn Drover's Empires: The Age of Discovery — Part of the Alphabet Challenge. I'm not a fan of this game. It looks impressive, but gameplay feels constrained and linear. Everything is simple in this game: to be a little more efficient here always takes one special action there. To make things worse is that certain buildings which can really boost a certain strategic path, may not come out; it's not particularly fair if your opponent all of a sudden scores a nice bonus because the building he needed did appear. The game works, I'll give it that, but I'm continuously amazed by how fondly people speak of this design. Or I'm blind to some subtlety which obviously eludes me.
Hoity Toity — Part of the Alphabet Challenge (in Dutch it's called Adel Verplicht, noblesse oblige, hence the 'a'). This game is... dysfunctional. It is really, really repetitive; there is little to gain from turn to turn; and if there aren't enough players, the lack of interaction at the auction house or the castle can bore you to tears. My partner played for 10 minutes and then suggested we break it off. I seriously hope this is the last time I ever have to play this waste of good board, card stock and energy.

Luna is a great game with a strange theme and an almost abstract feel. I have played it on-line at yucata.de since but no face to face games since last March. I'm still open to further "live" plays.
Hive: The Ladybug As I wrote back then, Hive: The Ladybug is a perfect 2-tile expansion for Hive and I thought it would be used in each of my Hive games from back then. And that's what happened. I really like this piece. Kunterbunte Autorelli A simple roll and move race game for the smallest kids - while my son has his new favorites now he still likes playing it again and again.
No plays since: Die Burgen von Burgund Kingsburg and Kingsburg: To Forge a Realm Liar's Dice (Perudo) (It's strange - I thought I have played it since. Maybe I didn't record the later play? What's sure is I have bought the game for myself later.) Civilization Olympus Asteroyds (another game I bought - cheap in Essen) Glen More(I've grown to really appreciate Cramer's games since; I was sure a year ago I should replay this one and I'm even more sure I would enjoy it more than back then.) Charon, Inc. Sun, Sea & Sand Hive: The Mosquito (as I said - a good expansion but is different from the rest of the tiles so it's not used every time we play Hive) Heckmeck Junior

"Luna" has an official 1-player variant included in the rulebook. I've yet to play it (my wife never says no when I propose a duel), but I think it has potential to be great - "Luna" tends to be a "thinky" game and the virtual player won't mind occasional analysis paralysis...

Finally got a few games that have been in our collection unplayed for a while to the table, a great month for new (to us) games.
Luna - By far my favourite. Played it three times in three weeks, and loved every game. It felt like a fresh take on worker placement (or... Sort of worker placement...), had lots of interesting ways to earn points and different aspects to focus on. Absolutely beautiful production too. It's our first Stefan Feld game too, and there will be more in the future for sure!
Airlines Europe - Finally. Have had this one for a long time now. And it was a huge hit with everyone. My wife was worried it would be too Ticket to Ride-ish (one of her favourite games by the way) but it isn't at all. It was a fairly tight game, but I managed a win due to being the first to go for the Air Abacus shares.
SmileyFace - I've played this three times now, and I love it a lot. The production is not to my taste (and I hear it originally had a different theme, though I forget what it was) but the game is really fun. We don't have many 'take that' style games in our collection, and so this is one of the meanest games we own. My wife didn't love the way things change so quickly, she prefers games with more control. But I think we all had fun with it anyway.
Hike - Bought specifically to play at work where they prefer light, straight forward games, this probably won't get much (if any) play outside of that. But, the folks at work enjoy it, and have requested it a couple of times. Kind of a slightly more complicated Uno, it's enjoyable, though not my first choice. Mow - Another work specific game. Also simple, though I prefer this one to Hike. Plays quick. One of my work mates enjoyed it enough to order a copy (along with Smileyface and Parade - her first game order). Cartagena - My wife won a copy of this at our local game group. Though we probably wouldn't have bought it, it is clever and fun (and quick). We don't have any great race games in our collection yet, and this will do in the mean time. It was a little dry for my liking though.
EXPANSIONS
Ticket to Ride - Legendary Asia - Great map. I managed to get stuck with the only long ticket that cut from one side of the map to the other and was royally boned. Looking forward to playing more of it. I liked the train graveyard too.
Ticket to Ride - Asia - The team game was a brilliant idea, and really well executed. It's hard to not tell your teammate what you want them to be doing! It was the quietest and most thoughtful game of Ticket to Ride I think I've ever played. Looking forward to more!

Raman called it a night and Jeff and I hunted for one last game to play. Our old friend Zöëÿ meandered over to us again and we decided to play Luna. Jeff ran us through the rules and we got started. With starting a new game at 2:30am, we were getting a bit loopy so this was a fun experience. We did an equal amount of playing and laughing about inane things, I seem to remember.
I'd been wanting to get this played at the convention this year, and really enjoyed it. It has a great mix of feeling out your opponents, long-term strategy, and short-term tactics. If you're ever in need of a good game to play at three in the morning after two straight days of game-playing at an Indianapolis convention with a lot of great people, I can personally recommend this one as a winner.

Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer + RotF (65)
Ascension: Storm of Souls (2) Blood Bowl: Team Manager - The Card Game (1) Luna (1)
---
More Ascension (both iOS and f2f), which is always great fun. On Monday I received almost all of the available promo's. I also printed up proxies for the ones that are not currently available. I'm not sure if I should add them to Storm of Souls or if I should add them to CotG + RotF when I receive CotG in the mail.
Blood Bowl continues to be fun. There was recently a FAQ released which basically eliminates some of the upgrade cards from the game (except as an optional variant. At this point I could be complaining about how this is another example of how FFG doesn't properly test their games before releasing them, but I find this one to be so fun that I'm not so concerned if it's 100% balanced. It will be interesting to see how the game plays with the cards removed but it does remove an avenue to victory. It's currently contested whether it's an OP path to victory, but regardless I'll give the new config a try.
Luna...
Luna is a game of worker placement, action selection, timing, and a hint of area majority. Using the workers has a variety of functions such as: making new actions available, augmenting always available actions, increasing area majority tiebreaker standings which also give you points, avoiding negative points while possibly also trying to inflict them on others, creating more workers, moving your workers, and a variety of other things. The graphic design/artwork is nice and there is no hidden information or cards. The tempo of the game from round to round is in the hand of the players.
While this all sounds good and interesting, I didn't really enjoy the game. As I've only played one game and at what I would probably consider to be the worst player counter (3) I'm probably not the best one to judge the game. Here is what I didn't like about it: I didn't like the two types of targeted player attacks. There are 7 islands and a character that will cause negative points to all players that have workers on that island. You can use worker actions to move this character. You can protect yourself against this targeted attack by having available workers to move the character again, but it wasn't something I enjoyed having to keep in mind.
The second type of targeted attacks come from the temple. Workers in the temple provide points from round-to-round. When new workers are added to the temple, they can potentially kick out opposing players workers. Not only does this gain you points per round, but you also stop opponents from gaining points per round, you gain an immediate point per worker kicked out, and essentially create a situation where opponents need to use special actions to use the workers again otherwise they'll be sitting on wasted potential. Protection from being kicked is available through special actions and careful planning. Overall, I can say that this was a big turnoff for me as in a 3 player game someone can be hit by these attacks from both opponents which can essentially can put a player completely out of the running. Full disclosure: that was me in my game played.
This is essentially a euro in that you are optimizing the use of your workers and actions to try and get the most points. I didn't really like the type of player interaction involved for a game of this type. I don't mind this type of interaction for the area control type of euro games but that's not the type that Luna is despite having a small amount of area majority included within it. If you ever wished that you could destroy your opponents fences in or kill opponents livestock in Agricola, Luna may be the kind of game you're looking for.

Sorry again for updating so late. I think today is the first day I've felt mostly normal from being sick so I appreciate your patience in my getting my entry up. What's on the horizon? Wednesday I will be playing my first game of Mage Knight. I'm really looking forward to playing this and think it will has potential to fire War of the Ring 2nd edition before I've even played it. It will be a 3 player game with everyone being new to the game. I'm debating between the intro scenario and the "Blitz Conquest" scenario. Could anyone that's played Mage Knight please explain to me me what this means:
"Whenever you cross a line on the Fame track, you get 1 extra Fame."
I've looked up various information on the Fame/Reputation board and I don't know what this means. When they mean a line, do they mean when you gain a level and are starting in a new row? I've never read anything referred to as a line in either the walkthrough or rulebook.
Anyway, what else? Well, as you all know my Resolution at this point is thrown out the window! So, I decided to get Rex: Final Days of an Empire. This is despite the fact that I probably won't have 5 - 6 players to get it to the table anytime soon and despite the fact that if I can get 5 - 6 players I should probably be playing BSG instead! Oh well! At least Jesse has a favorable opinion of it so far.
So, this is what I have coming when the CE expansion arrives in a week or so:
Rex: Final Days of an Empire Wiz-War Gosu: Kamakor Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer 2nd Edition Cosmic Encounter: Cosmic Alliance War of the Ring: Sleeves & Box
If Mage Knight turns out to be amazing, I may cancel the WotR Sleeves/Artbox as I don't think I'll see a need to keep both games. Even if I do keep WotR, when the eventual expansions are released the extra cards are not going to fit in the box which is pretty lame. So, with removing that I may add one of the following to my order:
Carcassonne: The City The Castles of Burgundy Eclipse (89.99 language independent French edition) Arcana
I think I would like a copy of Carcassonne kicking around (for a newbie 2-3 player game) but since I have the game + expansions on iPad I figured the City might be a good alternative.
I shouldn't get Castles of Burgundy. It's Feld. It's a dice-based euro and I don't think it will be able to compete with Troyes except perhaps in the 2 player department. Sadly, I have way too many games that are great with 2 players already. I still can't deny wanting to try it however.
I shouldn't get Eclipse. It's probably best with 5 - 6 which will compete with BSG and Rex. I hate those generic space ship minis (way too overused... Galactic Emperor/Eminent Domain). Probably about a 4-ish hour game which generally tends to be a bit too long. It's expensive if I don't like it and it would probably be hard to get rid of the French edition.
I probably shouldn't get Arcana as I have waaaaaaaaaay to many card games and that's not even including the 2 kickstarter games I'm waiting to arrive. It does have really purdy artwork though.
Carcassonne seem the most likely.
