Born to Run [1975]

OK. Wow. Where did this just pop out from?? A stone cold classic record that both looks back and forward at the same time. This sets out to be an epic record bringing together the best that rock and roll can offer - and, somehow, it pretty much manages it!

Woohoo! I've been waiting for this to roll around again!

+ your user name
They call me-- Gregarius

+ your location:
Houston, TX 77018

+ dates you know you will not be around for more than 4-5 days
None (well, BGG.Con is in November, but I doubt this will take that long)
I just remembered that I will be at a conference June 21-24.

+ 4-5 games that you are currently enjoying (and a why you like them)
Quartermaster General - A simple, fun, and quick distillation of Axis & Allies.
Pairs - An incredibly simple pub game that gets a lot of play to open or close out a night of games.
Survive: Escape from Atlantis! - The old MB classic that experienced a resurgence with the reprint. It's been a hit when bringing in new players.
Imperial - A neat combination of Acquire and Risk that we've brought back out several times lately. Nice deep strategy here without being too heavy.

+ 4-5 you have seen on the thrift lists you want
Thunder Road - I used to own this one, but foolishly sold it. I've regretted it ever since. And with the new Mad Max movie coming out this summer, I keep thinking about how much fun it would be to play again.
Midnight Party - Another great old game. This one would actually be for a friend of mine who asked me to keep an eye out for it. I've brought his family several games in the past, and this one would be a great hit.
Bazaar - I don't really need this, as I have and like the latest reprint. However, the nostalgic in me would love to have the original 3M edition.
10 Days in the USA - I picked USA, but really any title other than Africa and Europe would be welcomed.

+ 4-5 things you like in games (mechanics, themes, etc.)
I like it all!
My ideal game is one that has good depth of strategy, high player interaction, and not too long a playing time. Knizia is my favorite designer, and most of his fit that bill.
I also like card games, abstract games, and vintage games. About the only thing that doesn't interest me is war games, and even that is changing lately.

One last note: I join this exchange in order to give, not to take. So if you don't have anything laying around that would suit me, don't worry about it! Go ahead and send it my way so that I can add some goodies for whomever is next.

Don't know how to make these bigger. Minis were surprisingly detailed for a 1987 MB game. Very, very fun with the painted cars and better flight stands.

The box has moderate wear and compression dishing on the top and bottom. The contents are in great shape but it's missing one small tan car and one wreck. Perfectly playable with 2 or 3 players. The rules are a scanned copy.

A Mad Max racing game in which you try to shoot your competitors or ram them of the road. If you fail to do so with your armoured cars, there's always your chopper as a last back up! Cars falling behind will also have to leave the race.

Don't take it too seriously. This is your typical MB-style of game, roll the dice, don't think too much and have fun!!

Won by Pieter!

I had picked this up on eBay and was eager to play it. It's fast, easy to learn and fun. It could use a few rule modifications to add complexity or objectives - I'll have to check out the Geek's listing to see who has designed some!

It's Mad Max: The Board Game.

And...it's not terrible. That said, it's pretty freaking amazing and a LOT of fun to play at cons where the energy level is pretty high.

In this game, we were Jeff, Kevin, Damian, and myself.

Not surprisingly, I rolled terribly. Having rolled about 50 dice, I think I may have rolled one 6 with the majority of them being 1's and 2's.

That said, I was first out and wandered the main ballroom and rest of the convention space just to soak it all in.

Jeff led this one handily all game, but I understand Damian pulled a miraculous come from behind win in this one and was the last man on the...

Initially, my die rolling echoed that of the earlier game and I quickly found all my cars flipped. I had to step away for a few minutes and when I finally came back, I found one of my cars repaired and in the thick of it.

Figuring that with my die rolling back at the helm, I would quickly be out and started tossing dice with gusto and was shocked with some really fortunate rolls for a change and managed to hang in there for a while, even seizing the lead for a few rounds. Unfortunately, being in the lead in THUNDER ROAD brings the heat and it wasn't long before my car was a glorious smoking hulk on the Thunder Road.

Maybe next year.

d10-1 Games that you are currently enjoying (and why you like them).

Tragedy Looper Holy Mindscrew batman!
Xia 4X without the superheavy time commitment.
King's Forge (Really enjoying the depth on this one)
Titan - AH and Valley Games It's titan... it's a way of life (I enjoy it about 2-3 times a year but that is my limit )
Heroes Wanted Amazing what can be done with such a small hand of cards.
Splendor So simple, so light... so much like a knife fight in a phonebooth towards the end

d10-2 Games you have seen more than once on the thrift lists you want - the game you are most hopeful for should be the Geeklist entry item to catch people's attention.

I love classic games (Which is why I got into thrifting to begin with)

Grail games (No shot in ever of getting these but I can hope)

Dark towerI have the tower for this with what is most likely a broken key pad (No game)
Fireball Islandone of the holy grails of AT games.
Evo - First editionThe reprint just didn't do it for me.
Nuclear War I once found a few cards for this in another thrift :sob: (Though the thrift was a complete copy of Junta... so I had that to dry my eyes with )
Chateau Rocqfort with Cheesy Gonzola This game was way too much fun.

Sippy cups (Likely but still rarer)
Cities and Knights or Seafarers of Catan for my 3rd edition set.
Roller Coaster TycoonHeard this is good but can only find parts copies :/
BazaarAny edition.
Rocky and Bullwinkle RPG Just found out this existed and my Wife would love it forever...

d10-3 Things you like in games.

Fun, 5+ players is good too (I mostly play games to socialize)

d10-4 What is your favorite style of game? Least favorite?

I like games that are easy to bring to the table and explain. This doesn't mean they need to be simple... but a pile of fiddly rules only get played infrequently (Well except for Titan )

d10-5 How much do you like: Ameritrash, Eurogames, Family, Party, War, or Strategy games?

Ameritrash -
Eurogames -
Family -
Party - (Extra star for North Star Games )
War - (Really depends on the game, but the hex and counter historical affaris in general don't appeal to me)
Strategy -

d10-6 Do you play games with children? If so, what ages?

Yes and Yes.. (4-94)

d10-7 Anything else you enjoy or think would help Santa find the right gift for you.

I would rather have something Santa thinks I would enjoy but may have never heard of than something on my Wishlist... The biggest TSS hit I have received was Sutakku and I had no idea it even existed.

I also love extra bits... I have a shelf full of games that need parts copies to live again.

I will do more updating later

d10-0Preamble: My household is one that enjoys Euros, though I've noticed my son is more attracted to 70s-80s old school MB/PB Ameritrashiness. One of his favorites includes Fireball Island. I'm thinking the Mad Max theme of this will really appeal to him and I want to get him to the table more.

d10-1Games that you are currently enjoying (and why you like them)

When it comes to my wife and my friends, we are very much into various Euros; our favorites can be split into two groups - ones standing the test of time (i.e. requested constantly) and new ones we're enjoying.

Household classics:
Alhambra
Puerto Rico
Carcassonne
Downfall of Pompeii
El Grande
Tikal
Thebes
Pandemic
Arkadia
Mille Bornes
Pit
Alien Frontiers
Bazaar
Enemy Chocolatier

Newer Ones:
T'Zolkin The Mayan Calendar
Euphoria
Fantasy Frontier
Eight Minute Empire
Viticulture

We love these for the themes and gameplay; they just seem to resonate. Worker placement seems to have become quite popular.

d10-2Games you have seen more than once on the thrift lists you want - the game you are most hopeful for should be the Geeklist entry item to catch people's attention.

This is noted in my pre-amble...

A game I traded away that I wish I hadn't was Fury of Dracula (the newer Fantasy Flight version); so I'd love to reacquire it.

A close third since sometimes I find myself traveling without others that game (thanks to work) would be someone making up the stickers for Aether Captains for me. I just never seem to find the time to do create PnP games.

Along with that would be Urbion or Friday.

I'd also welcome any Heroscape characters. (I'm pretty well set on terrain except for Lava tiles.)

I also would enjoy getting the 3M Quinto game; we like our 3M games in the house and this one has eluded me...

Another game I haven't had time to make is duck! duck! Go!

And finally, stickers for indented dice for Chunky Fighters would be welcome as well..

d10-3Things you like in games.

Worker placement seems to have caught on; we also like co-ops. Some mechanics we enjoy, and we'd like to play more of are action points and area influence.

For themes, science fiction is a huge winner at our place as well as themes involving Europe, Egypt, Japan, or China (though Takenoko seems to have only have hit it off with me).

I have eclectic tastes so a wide variety of themes work for me.

d10-4What is your favorite style of game? Least favorite?

Euros with tough choices that play in about 45-60 minutes seem to be at the top of our list. Wargames are the least favorite in the household. (I have a limited set that I truly adore, but they do rarely make it to the table.)

What I and my friends don't care for are Horror or Zombie themed games. I also avoid collectible games having gotten burned IMHO on Monsterpocalypse and not being able to complete armies...

d10-5How much do you like: Ameritrash, Eurogames, Family, Party, War, or Strategy games?
Prioritized order with a relative ranking matrix (10 is highest, 1 is lowest).

10 - Euros
8 - Ameritrash, Strategy
7 - Abstracts
6 - Family (We like a bit of meat on our games...)
4 - War Games, Party Games (Trivia knowledge-related excepted)
1 - Trivia Games

d10-6Do you play games with children? If so, what ages?

I play with my son (along with some of his friends occasionally); he is 12 coming up on 13 now.

d10-7Anything else you enjoy or think would help Santa find the right gift for you.

I'll appreciate almost anything I receive. If it won't get played here, it will probably make its way into one of the Generosity Boxes, so rest assured it will go someplace it can be loved.

d10-8Parts...

So I mailed stuff back from Australia after some training in Brisbane... (wanted to lighten my luggage) and it has gone AWOL; in there was some Rory's Story Cubes and Dixit cards I use on occasion in training and retrospectives. For Dixit or the cubes, they don't need to be - just about 15-30 cards and however many dice you can spare...

My stuff arrived from Australia yesterday - I have to think my Thrifty Santa helped get it delivered.

I also could really use some Carcassonne tiles and a few meeples to add to my Fearless Journey game that I play with teams and managers to help them. The tiles needed are shown in https://www.dropbox.com/s/zgium76fiq5tztz/Extensions_Propose... though they are the Winter Edition (regular tiles would do....)

I've also been making up personal visioning kits to use for facilitating Lego for Serious Play sessions - see http://seriousplaypro.com. I could really use an incomplete Lego Atlantis Treasure game; the primary things I need in it are the blue 1x10 plates, the "seaweed", the compass direction plates, and the greenish gems. The Trident would be nice, but isn't necessary. I'd also welcome other Lego bricks, bits, and such as well, particularly oddball pieces that can be used for metaphors (fruit, faucets, etc.)

The one 3M Monad game that was graciously given to me is missing one bonus card, one light blue identity card, and one green common card. If you can fulfill those 3 cards I'd be very gracious...

I have Daytona500, but its missing money, the cards, and the rules :-(

My Mix-Up game is missing the shapes tile

And I have Nizza, but it is missing one black column.

one more find this week - popped into a local charity shop which generally has not a lot of games and found this for £1.00 - some nasty tape on the box which has been there for years and is super sticky but other than that complete with 1 broken engine block which needs a little glue.

They also have a pile of older board games that someone has told them must be worth money as they are priced up at £10 -15. From memory they had an old spy ring, old risk and Careers - not going to shift at that price!

Where We Went

The 'normal', non-geeky bit of the List. Hopefully with a few tips and pointers for future visitors.

Stop 1 - An over-nighter in Bellshill, near Glasgow, to break up the long drive north. No, it's not posh, and it's not touristy, but I'm pleased to report that Premier Inns all over the country are of an excellent standard. An excellent dinner, and a night of games in the pub - what more could you want?

Stop 2 - Fort William & Oban. Walking, climbing, sea-kayaking and steam trains. Every time we go back to the West Highlands there are new places to explore, and we haven't even started on the Islands yet. Fantastic scenery; fantastic seafood. We stayed with a friend of Becky's, Nick, who is a proto-gamer in his own right, plus he has a large collection of single-malt whiskies! And that was our evenings sorted...

Stop 3 - Edinburgh. Truth be told, I'm not a big fan of Edinburgh. It appears to be full of both asinine tourists or imbecilic hipsters, and the city centre is madcap and over-priced. We sought some of the lesser-known attractions this time, and I can thoroughly recommend Gilmerton Cove and Craigmillar Castle for those wanting to escape the crowds.

Stop 4 - Durham. A much more charming city, all told. Also home to my mother, so an opportunity to visit her. She has a new dog (a labradoodle) taking up much of her time, energy and attention, so Durham was long walks followed by evenings pub-quizzing.

Stop 5 - Scarborough. I am more or less happy to fall into Scarborough's tourist traps because I've been going there so long. We went to the Amusement arcades, Peasholm Park naval warfare, Whitby, Filey (also some sun and a couple of days on the beach) and a lovely pub out on the moors. The B&B had a delightful lounge with comfy sofas and a big table: great for gaming.

Stop 6 - North Lincolnshire. Again, not very touristy, but dropping in on my father on the way home ensures a few days' complete rest and good food before the final leg home.

A clever dice-rolling combat extravaganza with a great Mad Max-style post apocalyptic theme. The vehicles could be molded much more durably today than they were in the '80s.
