Missing 1 helicopter, which I had in my spare parts bins. It is in better shape than the one in my collection.

This was in the cupboard at my mum's house, and since it's rated as age 7+ we got it out to try with Joe (5 y/o).. we played by the full rules, which weren't that complicated, and Joe did very well to grasp the mechanics of the game... he did get a bit over-enthusiastic for attacking with his chopper and wanted to do that most turns, instead of the once-per game board in the rules, but overall he did very well. I wasn't a huge fan of the game and it definitely seemed to drag on, to the point where we just wanted anyone to win and end the game.

Thunder Road - 1 play - thumbsupthumbsdown
First Published 1986

My family picked this up back in the late 80s... it was at a time when we were into Games Workshop games of the time, and I'd really wanted Dark Future, their Mad Max style game of car-nage. Thunder Road had a similar theme too it, but was nowhere near as cool looking, or complex.

I have no memory of actually playing Thunder Road and certainly when I got it out of the cupboard at my mum's house, over Easter, in an attempt to entertain my Eldest, I had to read through the rules and try to figure out how to play. The game is rated 7+, however my 5 year old coped really well with the simple rules and the idea of the game... he did want to keep attacking with his chopper and didn't quite get that it could only attack once per game board.. but certainly managed ok with rolling and moving his cars, rolling the bonus "road" dice, and attacking when possible.

The movement and combat are very simple and heavily luck dependent... especially the 50% chance you have of a car being wrecked by a collision. And, although it seems like it would be a pretty quick game, it really dragged on, and after a while we were just hoping that someone would eventually win. The boy enjoyed it though, and we'll probably play it some more... Ironic that my kids may get more out of the game than either myself or my brother ever did.

I grew up with this game, and it was one of the first ones I reacquired when I started gaming again as an adult. My friends and I still occasionally taunt each other with chants of "Ram! Ram! Ram!"

Greetings!

I can be found in Houston, Texas, 77018.

I will be away from the above location for the week of May 16-20.

Games I'm Currently Enjoying:

First, the boring obvious ones:
Pandemic: Legacy - We're enjoying the progressive storytelling aspect of the game, even though I totally screwed up a significant rule at the beginning (I think it just made the game easier for us, fortunately). I'm really looking forward to SeaFall.
Codenames - I came to this game much later than most due to bad timing, but the hype has been completely true in my case. It's been a huge hit with every group I've tried it with.

Now the more unique or interesting ones:
Kraftwagen - A really neat economic game about the burgeoning German car industry in the early 1900s. It's a clean design with a lot of different avenues to pursue.
Leaving Earth - A very clever game about the burgeoning space exploration industry in the early 1960s. Although I think the art and game design are beautiful, I doubt I'll ever inflict this one upon my friends; I'll just play it solo and geek out by myself.
London - In a very strange development, I pushed this on my wife as a two-player game recently. Little did I realize that I unleashed a monster! She loved it, and we ended up playing dozens of games in a few weeks. It's especially great with the Ben-Luca Variant.

Thrifted Games I'd Love to Find in the Container:
Thunder Road - Yeah, I know--the chances are very low ever since Mad Max: Fury Road came out. But you never know! One of a number of games that I owned and then passed on, and now regret.
Gumshoe - Another long shot. I have this requested on the Thrifting for You list, and I'll make the same offer here: If I receive this, I promise that once I have played it that I will pass it on to whomever wants to experience it next.
Others:
Ricochet Robots, Adventurers: Temple of Chac, Omega Virus, DungeonQuest, Roma, Roma II, Mystery Rummy (any but Jack the Ripper), 10 Days in... (any but Africa or Europe), Animal Upon Animal

Things I Like in Games:
-Complete
-Playable
-Fun

As you may have gathered from both the games I'm playing list and the games I want list, my tastes are pretty wide. Old, new, co-op, solo, competitive, economic, strategy, family, party. It's all great! The only thing I definitely don't want is a war game.

Additional Info About Me:
I'm currently in the process of (trying to) severely reduce the number of games I own. In fact, I have a blog about it (shameless plug: One Year Purge). That means that I will be putting a lot more into this package than I plan on taking out. So don't worry about finding something I'll like. I'm really just using this box as another method of getting some more of my games into the hands of people who will appreciate them. If you've got nothing that matches anyone else, send it to me!

plus Ticket to Ride. (think Mad Max with trains.)

Because what game of Ticket to Ride doesn't need heavy machine gun fire and trucks with rome plows?

If we got the licensing rights, it would be called Mad Max with Trains. Otherwise, Ticket to Thunder Road.

Found a 1st edition Thunder Road at the local goodwill for $.99!! My gaming group had played quite a few racing games from Formula-D to Daytona 500. So finding a racing game where you have to destroy the other players was just something i had to jump at. We played about 10 times the first night, and have thus coined the term: "There is no mercy on Thunder Road." Very simple game but has brought us hours of fun!! One of the greatest Goodwill pick-ups ever!

A friend introduced me to this game at the height of the Mad Max: Fury Road release and I knew I had to have a copy. I picked up the UK version and was happy to see that it worked well with Dropzone Commander (10mm).

I decided to pimp out the game with some customization to the cars (replacing the "figures" with actual minis, painting them up, adding Roolz gyrocopter propeller idea, etc).

I also added some fan variant ideas such as selectable car powers and new terrain "boards" including a new printed board and "cliff/mesa" terrain additions. More details are here in this post.

Enjoy!

If you have a copy collecting dust, please consider putting it up in the Board Game Auction!

Long Time No See

Thor
=

I haven't seen Thor since its original release in theaters, and yet seeing it 5 years later my reaction is still the same. I find Thor to be one of the least interesting Marvel characters, and his presence in the Avengers universe does absolutely nothing for me. In this story we have a pompous prince who puts his entire kingdom at risk because he thinks genocide is the best option, and an underdog prince who was saved from dangerous parents as a child and reluctantly supports his big brother with the cunning and tact that he lacks. Sounds like great fodder for an epic hero's tale of overcoming adversity, right? Problem is the one who we're supposed to root for is the conceited and overbearing brother, Thor. In this film he gets banished to Earth. This is where he shows growth as a character, right? Well, not really. After what seems like about a week without his powers, his decision to sacrifice himself in place of this girl he thinks is hot somehow shows him to be so humble that he is once again worthy of his title. Then there is a big confrontation between the brothers (which was entirely Odin's fault for completely raising and treating Loki wrong, I might add) and Thor is forced to destroy his one way of getting back to Earth. I think we're supposed to see this as tragic because Thor is surprisingly attached to Earth despite having been there for so little time. Never fear, the bridge will be entirely repaired without explanation by the next movie.

Needless to say, I have some big plot issues with Thor. Yet I still get some enjoyment out of the movie because it is a Marvel film and it succeeds at some of the key points we expect in MCU movies. First of all the casting is just superb. Chris Hemsworth is perfect as the the God of Thunder and Anthony Hopkins is also amazing as the All-Father. Natalie Portman (when she still cared somewhat,) Stellan Skarsgard, and Kat Dennings are great at delivering scientific dialogue without making it tedious or boring. But the real magic of this cast, and the cast of every other movie that features Loki, is Tom Hiddleston. Part of my biggest dilemma in watching these Thor movies is that Hiddleston makes Loki so charming that I like him more than Thor, so I want to root for him. It just happens to be amplified in this particular movie because he actually has the more sympathetic motivation. This movie also has the Marvel humor we've all come to know and hopefully love. It's always welcome when they make it clear that they're not taking things too seriously so neither should we. Finally, the special effects are pretty good, especially the Destroyer. The CGI makes Asgard a very magical and beautiful place which fits with the mythical background of that world. Despite the good things, as of right now this is easily my least favorite film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But it's still better than many films that have been made by other studios with popular Marvel characters, so it's tough to complain.

Thunder Road 2 plays

"If I'm gonna die, I'm gonna die historic on the Fury Road!"

Okay, the trashy classic that is Thunder Road was released almost 30 years before the amazing spectacle that is Mad Max: Fury Road, but the quote applies very well to this game. (Milton Bradley's 1986 release was an obvious love letter to The Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome.) Each player controls three vehicles and a helicopter racing down a highway trough a post-apocalyptic wasteland. What is the prize for this race... a tanker of gasoline? An oasis of water? Avoiding being pasted across the hot asphalt? Whatever the prize, there is a sense that your survival depends on you leaving your competitors as mangled wrecks far in your rear-view mirror. To that end, you must ram, shoot, and speed past the other drivers any which way you can.

The game has a neat mechanic in which the arrow-straight highway and surrounding ditch are portrayed on two separate interconnected boards (though my boards are weirdly misprinted, so I have to overlay them instead of connecting them). Once the first car drives off the lead board, the back one detaches, dumping any stragglers, and is moved to the front to become the new lead board. The more cars get dumped, the fewer cars left to reach the end of this infinite highway to nowhere. The last player who still has cars on the board is the winner.

Great fun with many laughs, cheers, and groans of despair. This is what simple beer and pretzel games should aspire to.

8.5/10

Future Prospects:

I plan to bring this with me to public gaming events so it should definitely get played with some regularity.

T.I.M.E Stories 1 play

This is a hard game to describe, in part because there really isn't a comparable tabletop game that I can think of... the closest analogues are probably video games like Resident Evil, or Nintendo DS puzzle games like Professor Layton or Phoenix Wright, mixed with the movie Groundhog Day. And the TV show Quantum Leap ("Oh, boy...").

Basically, the game comes with a single story scenario that players will play through, again and again, until they complete it within the time allotted. Some clues you learn will become consistent changes in future tries at the scenario, though, so it's not like you're just playing the exact thing over and over. The telling of the story evolves (or at least streamlines) to prevent becoming stale on subsequent attempts.

It really is incredibly unique and innovative, and full of great characters and loads of style. Once you've finished a scenario, though, there's really no replayability, but future expansions providing all new scenarios are already in the works.

I do have two critiques, though. One is that it's over-produced. It has a superfluous board and seems to include more tokens than necessary. For a game with such low replayability, and one that necessarily puts you on the expansion treadmill, it'd be nice if they made the package smaller and with a lower price tag.

My other critique is that it's an awkward and fairly artificial rule that explored cards cannot be read aloud to members of the group who occupy other spaces in the same location, but can relay the gist of the content. I see no purpose to this rule.

I guess I have a third critique in that its replay value is incredibly limited, especially if you happen to sprint through the scenario. But I don't personally own the game, so that critique doesn't apply to me so much.

7.5/10

Future Prospects:

I'm part of a group that's playing through the campaign together, so I've already played this twice in December and will likely play a few more times before the end of the year. The owner plans on getting the next module, so I should keep playing it into 2016 (assuming I take part in that campaign as well).

Nations 1 play

This game is obviously heavily inspired by Through the Ages. Nations modernizes its older brother to some degree by streamlining some processes, shortening the play time, and the use of tokens instead of sliding markers up and down tracks is an improvement. It also adds differentiation between nations, which is something I appreciate because I dig asymmetry in games. They're pretty much even in terms of strategic and tactical decisions.

But I prefer Through the Ages, despite the fact that there are more hurdles to playing it. I think it does a better job of capturing the civilization theme, it's more interactive and geared towards aggression, there's more opportunity for ebb and flow because players get so many more actions over the course of the game, and, frankly, Nations is quite derivative and I tend to give more respect to a wholly inventive design.

7/10

Future Prospects:

I'd like to play it again, but I won't be getting a copy for myself since I already own Through the Ages (which I've played 4 times in the past two weeks).

Bomb Squad 3 plays

It's basically Hanabi meets RoboRally / Space Alert. It makes for a smart combination of mechanics, but not hugely inventive. You play against a clock (an app), which definitely makes the game more fun than it would be without it.

I'd actually never heard of this game prior to it being set up on the table, so I had no expectations going in (which is refreshing). We played one of the easier scenario three consecutive times, finally claiming victory by diffusing both bombs on our third attempt. Didn't score well, though, because we didn't leave enough time to rescue hostages.

6.5/10

Future Prospects:

It's quick fun, so I'd play it again. I'd like to try other scenarios.

Fief: France 1429 1 play

Geez. I expected to quite like this game, but it is a dinosaur of a design that I can't imagine has been modernized much if at all in its iterations over the past 35 years. But even its early 80s heritage isn't an excuse, considering AH released the classic Dune in 1979 and, untouched, that one doesn't feel dated at all. I'm very surprised considering the other titles I've tried by Academy Games have been so refined and streamlined.

There are several design quirks that killed it for me:
- it is hugely luck-dependent (especially the negative event cards that show up in random locations), with many of those turns of fate extending the length of the game;
- there is no game clock, so a game can go on indefinitely;
- the niggling rules are full of esoteric terminology, making the game more difficult to learn than it should be;
- the game never became internalized or natural to any of the players so there were constant references to the rulebook and reference sheets;
- voting was much more awkward than in any other game I've played;
- apart from victory conditions, negotiation and alliances are fairly negligible because there are no in-game benefits to them.

3.5/10

Future Prospects:

Having said all that, I did have fun playing Fief -- after all, it's hard not to have fun playing a conflict-heavy diplomatic war game with people into that genre -- but it was fun had more in spite of the design than because of it. If I had never played games like Dune, A Game of Thrones, or Dominant Species, some of these issues might not have bothered me as much. But I have played those games, and would continue to opt for them over Fief if given the choice.

It has become tradition for this game to come out late at night in the main ballroom and for us to MAKE SOME NOISE.

Sadly as one of the roudier types, I was still under the weather and my throat was not up to rabble rousing, so David E, Kevin, Bobby and myself had the quietest con game of Thunder Road ever.

At one point I was completely out of the game, but managed to repair my large vehicle and rammed my way to glorious reckless victory.

In this game we literally Live, Die and LIVE AGAIN!

Before the world crumbled these were Micro Machines. War Rigs are not officially part of the game, but have good variant rules available.

Conversions made with some old plastic from a binder. Cabs are painted to match the colours of my painted set. I left all the trailers black to keep the gritty look. I have one more, but haven't decided on a base colour yet.

Mini: Kit-bashed Micro Machines; Scale: 10mm; Paints: Vallejo and Army Painter

The box is a little abused. It's got some wear and tear on it. One corner is split and taped up. It's also missing a single component: One piece of car wreckage. It doesn't impact play much. You can just substitute in an overturned Micro Machine, or an unused player piece, or a stone of some kind. Boards and pieces are in fantastic condition. Can provide pictures if desired.

Starting Bid: $1

BIN: $80

Winner is Chiselphane for $40.

This was one of my friends games (see details in geeklist description).

Box looks amazing minus age is showing. Everything looked in great condition and helicopters all had rotating blades.

Starting Bid $40

BIN $110

Top of box is slightly Bowed

Punch through bottom of box.

Version pictured, $8.00 from same seller as above item. I've seen this game go for a LOT of money, so I jumped on it.

Unfortunately, this is missing quite a few bits:

1 Green Thunder Chopper
1 White Thunder Chopper
1 Wreck
1 peach Eliminator (the black plastic undercarriage is there, but not the colored plastic shell)
2 Yellow Dice (These should be easy enough to replace)
1 Instruction booklet

So, yeah, I have a bit of looking to complete this one, but for $8.00 I'm still pretty pleased with this find!!

"LIVE, DIE, LIVE AGAIN!"

Good condition, everything included. The box itself has a corner kind of crumpled slightly and some minor very light discoloration in a couple spots. One of the choppers has its propeller glued so it doesn't rotate. Everything else is great.

Starting Bid: $100
BIN: $120

Shipping is $15 to CONUS.

This is the First U. S. Edition (1986) by Milton Bradley.

The box is a bit damaged on the corners, one of the white buggies is broken, and it's missing 3 of the 6 original dice (1 yellow, 2 red).

I fixed the white buggy with super glue and it's ok as long as you treat it carefully, and I'll get three new dice to replace the ones that are lost.

All the cars/choppers/wrecks are complete, and the track and instructions are in great condition.
