Unpunched.

Box shows some compression damage and there is one place along the edge where a bit of the outer paper has peeled off and the brown of the cardboard shows through.

Reached 50 plays: 2016

This actually, thinking about it, reached 50 plays on my _first_ play of 2016, not the second; I played once in 1995, the year before I started recording plays.

Comments: OOP. Underrated? Attention Train Gamers. This one actually is a true variation on classical 18RR. 2038 is a space mining adaptation of the 18xx series of games. First, you have the ever important stock trading rounds followed by operating rounds where you try to deliver commodities mined from the asteroid belt. Instead of laying track, the players explore the asteroid belt and lay claims to various mining resources. During operation rounds, ships move from mine to mine limited only by their fuel and the players' refueling stations. Randomly generated map greatly increases replay value.

Condition: Smoke-free home. Still in shrink.

Edition: English. Most recent edition. Prism/TimJim.

Shipping: I will cover the full cost to ship to the US (50 states, APO/FPO, & US Territories).

Sweetener(s): None.

Important Trade Notes:
I have over 600 Positive trade references on BGG, so you can confidently add my offers to your Want List; however, please do not add any of my items to your WL until you have read Details on Game Condition.

Note: I leave POSITIVE feedback for the Receiver (aka Null Sender) in MT transactions unless there is a serious attitude problem that causes a total meltdown. You should too.

Note: I will not be able to get shipments packaged up until two weeks after the close of the MT. If you cannot wait, please do not put any of my items on your Want List as I do not want to disappoint you with a delayed delivery.

$20 at the Poway thrifts.
Probably not too thrifty but I'm a sucker for old bookcase sci-fi games and this is a sci-fi themed version of 18xx how could I pass.
It's in excellent shape, unpunched and barely any shelf wear.
Plus with how much of a black hole it's been in the SD area, it's was nice to find something.

2038 - Even after playing many different 18xx games, this one remains my favorite. I particularly appreciate how the tile draw makes every game very different.

Mü - While at times I haven't been sure about the game, with more play I've come to realize that while there are bad hands, there are few enough of them with no useful possibilities as to make the game better than most in that aspect.

Die Siedler von Catan - You know, I've always thought of the game as "Settlers", not "Catan". I suppose "Catan" is a more easily protected trademark...

Since there seemed at least a little interest in the possibility of playing this in the forum thread, I figure I'll bring it along. It will give me an excuse to finally read up on the rules and get everything punched. That is assuming it doesn't get added to the library list.

I'm certainly open to bringing other 18xx.

Played our first game of 2038 today. My friend Josh had been wanting to play this for a while, and I was interested in trying it out, despite our inexperience. This was only mine and Jacob's second full 18xx game, and Josh had a handful under his belt.

So we knocked out the short game, as recommended by Tom Lehmann, in about five hours. I think this would have been considerably shorter with some computer help, but unfortunately there was none available. I reached out to Joe Huber who suggested using the 1830 spreadsheet but that didn't seem like it would work all that well with minors and half payouts. I think an app similar to the one that exists for B&O would be incredibly useful. We did use the revenue chart from 1889 to ease calculations and Score 18XX for final scoring.

I suggested early on using pen & paper to keep track of money, after seeing it work so well in a recent game of Indonesia, but it was vetoed by the rest of the group. I think by the end of the game, after so much time counting chips and making change, everyone agreed that it likely would have worked out better.

As far as the game itself, I screwed myself early in the privates auction by not bidding on enough unique things. Which meant Jacob was making $20 extra income and Josh had the TSI presidency, while I had just two independents (same as everyone else). I did crawl back up to eventually be in the lead, but made another mistake mid game when I decided to only convert one of my independents to AL and the other into a growth corporation simply to see how each would work out. I think in a short game, there's little point to growth corporations, since they don't have enough time to run but I don't understand the concept well enough yet. When Jacob floated AL, he shot back into the lead, and neither of us could catch him. He ended the game a good $200 or so ahead of us.

The common complaint I'd heard about the game was the randomness of the tile draws, which I didn't find to be that big of a deal despite hating randomness myself. It does add a more tactical element to the game, but I could also see how it makes it infinitely replayable. More of an issue was that the lack of track laying meant two companies couldn't really work together. Once one company used up a mine, that was it. In this case it's more like B&O's cube tracks.

I liked the game well enough, and the theme works better than it's been given credit for, but the combination of extra calculation and fewer tools to deal with them, on top of less collaboration between companies means I would probably rather play a more traditional 18xx.

4 Player game, first time we've played the full game. Plan was to start at 7pm and push play as fast as possible to hit 6 hours and finish at 1am. In actuality, we didn't start until about 7:30, and there was a bit of chatter about politics (luckily, the 4 of us mostly agree, or it could have been much worse). So playtime was around 6.5 hours, which is still not too bad. I bet we could actually hit 5 hours with less jibber-jabber and another play under our belts.

I started the game with Drill Hound and the Free Claim Private, which wasn't a super strong position, but it eventually grew into this:

Those dice are showing 49, which was its run before it got that 6/5 ship. The last two ORs, it ran for something like $79 per share, due to Drill Hound driving that 6/5 from the top right corner of the board through about 3 Refuel points to the VP base. That's +40 per Rare in bonuses ($200 in bonuses alone for that ship).

LE, RU, and MM also very nice routes at the end of the game. RU, due to not floating in the stock round that it was launched, lagged behind the other three on stock price, despite the fact that VP, LE, and MM were all Growthed.

TSI started the game owned by the player to my right. In the opening stock round, AL presidency didn't sell because nobody had the $180. I had the most money left over, and paid out half of a decent run from Drill Hound. I think TSI paid out full (which was probably his first mistake). I entered SR2 with over $200, planning to buy AL if it was available, otherwise 2x TSI.

It turns out that the TSI player was the only other person with $180, so... he bought AL(!). That allowed me to buy 2 shares of TSI and take over the presidency. He was... unhappy about that. It probably cost him any shot at the game. Honestly, I think he had a chance to come back (at least to be relatively competitive) by playing a strong AL, but he got a little discouraged, and AL never got as strong as it probably should have.

By the end of the game, TSI, AL, and RCC were running pretty weak routes, though TSI and AL stock prices were both pretty high. I kinda wonder if 2038 wouldn't benefit from a rule like some other 18xx's where stock bumps depend on income vs. share price. Because paying out $21 per share and still being able to double jump feels a little weak. I guess that's just one of the quirks of this game. But I digress. I floated OPC in the last SR, just expecting it to gain a small amount of value and maybe ~$100 in dividends. Which it did. Also, getting $1000 to have the option of buying up trains or holding some of that money out of the bank to push the game towards an end.

I ended up in first with about $5500, about $500 more than the second place player who was running LE and RU. We both agreed that he made a mistake in buying up the last OPC, which was a less profitable share than the RU that was still available and also bumped up my stock price by somewhere around $12/share. I don't think it accounted for anywhere near the entire $500 margin, but it definitely accounted for at least a $100 swing. He might have been able to extend the game for another 2 ORs by dumping money back into the bank to buy ships, but I'm not entirely sure that he could have put back enough to keep it from breaking and we didn't math it out. It was also pushing 2am at that point, so we were ready to end it.

Final(-ish) board state (unfortunately, I didn't get a picture of the ending stock prices):

(sorry no pic available)

My "old timers" group is playing 2038 this month. We play Monday evenings for about 3 hours, then we store the game on a board, for easy deployment the next week.

2038 is the game I learned "18xx" upon. We used to play 2038 somewhat frequently back when it was first released. But it has been a decade, at least, since this group has played it. Personally, I have played it a handful of times since. But for this group, this is a bit of a nostalgic re-visitation.

Coming out of the initial auction, I attained control of TSI, but no independents. So I had initially little to do each OR. This isn't all bad, as I can lean back, enjoy my scotch, and catcall the moves of my fellow players. I had also managed to get the cert that gives me the control of when the Asteroid League forms. So I was enjoying a nice revenue stream, with little effort on my part.

Eventually the "train rush" pushed several of the independents into dire straights. I opted to form the League at this moment. Reason being that with no ship, all of their money would come to the League's coffers should they have no ship. And that's just what happened. Unfortunately all of the independents with ships avoiding joining, so the AL was a little slower out of the gate than I had hoped.

We're now further into the game, and the two growth corporations (which start at the very bottom of the chart) have been making impressive revenues, and are starting to have a share value close to their par. With our last session, I began to realize my position is not ideal. The shares I have, do have excellent value. But my share count is a little low. And I was surprised by the huge revenues the growth corps were able to attain.

We have at least one more session, probably two, before we reach conclusion. I'm not sure I can shake the table enough to alter my destiny. But regardless, this has been a fun game, and I believe we are now motivated to get back on the table again.

EDIT - We had just one more set of OR's as it turned out. I surprised my opponents, by taking the win after all. I had lost heart at the end of the last session. But it turned out my lead in the top three stock values was enough to overcome my deficit in cash. Everyone was pleased by the game, so I suspect we can organize another session later this year.

I only managed a single play of 2038: Tycoons of the Asteroid Belt, but I can tell that it is trying to push its way higher on the list because I kept looking for opportunities to play a second time, but came up dry. The base game is fine, but I think it's even better with the PnP expansion.
