If I had to choose between the top 100 and 1001-2000, it would be a _very_ easy choice - not only do I own three times as many game from the later group, but the games that I don't own are of significantly more interest; I've owned a lot of them previously, and would still gladly play them.

2038 is my 3rd favorite game. My 4th (1846, 9th (Frisch Fisch), and 14th (Schnäppchen Jagd) favorite games are also in the 1001-2000 range - and two of the other games I rate a 10 are actually ranked even lower. The game I'm currently most interested in getting a second play of in (Quartermaster General) is in the 1001-2000 range.

I won't bother listing the 45 games I own ranked 1001-2000, but for comparison sake, to hit 45 games I own starting from #1 I have to get to game #296. Yes, that's still a higher hit rate at the top - but not by enough that I see any reason to pay much attention to rankings.

That's Tim Powers' fictional Samuel Coleridge "quoting" John Milton in _The Anubis Gates_.

A year ago this month, I was fortunate enough to play a dozen new games and a few expansions. Some of them were mine; some friends'; I enjoyed the majority of them then: let's see how my views have changed over the past year. I rank things in decreasing order of my current enthusiasm, noting any deltas from the historic record.

2038: Tycoons of the Asteroid Belt -- (1 play last March; none since) _8_ (no change.)
(images by Aldaron & Original_CorPse)

I really enjoyed this last year, and am a bit sad that I've not yet managed to get it back to the table. We've played a few other 18xx, so it's not infeasible; but this is a bit longer than we usually prefer.

While the lack of play argues against it, I've got to claim that my enthusiasm for the title remains undimmed (or, weirdly, is if anything increased.) I thought the game was intriguing, and moreover found it the sort of thing that could easily have vaulted in to my top handful of games if I'd played it first as a younger person (when I had more time for Really Long games like this.)

1849 -- (1 play last March; none since) _8_ (no change)
(images by Werbaer & montsegur)

I loved this one too. And most of the things I'd said about 2038 apply here as well - except for the ahistoric favouriting thing. This is a game that I'd admire; a game I'd look forward enthusiastically to play: but it won't be a favourite. It's just too nasty - and I have a limited ability to survive such things.

I do find myself tempted by the (only) $300 copy visible in the marketplace - which might give one an idea of my residual enthusiasm.

トロルマスター (Tororumasutā 'Trollmaster') -- (6 plays last March; four since) _7.7_ (no change)
(both images by Zimeon)

This is a weird cool little thing. And one I'm enthusiastically happy to see in play. It's not been quite as successful for my usual opponents - for a variety of reasons. The cards have a fair amount of Japanese text - and the game is very much easier if one can read them (like my first few opponents) or remember what the translation says (me) than if one needed always to look things up in a companion translation sheet. I need pastups, I think, to make it tractable.

Still, it's a very cool little design: fast; a bit volatile; variable; amusing. Very happy to be able to play it occasionally.

Paperback -- (3 plays last March; three since) _7.7_ (no change; but up a place.)
(images by Fubeca & vandemonium)

Still something that my whole* family will play: this is quite charming.

If one was truly competitive, I think it could drag a bit: but we tend to help one another out with our words, and so the game tends toward a fluffy pleasant activity. If it got there, I'd need to rate things lower - but we still manage to pretend (to ourselves) that the game is hard-fought and competitive regardless of the truth.

*: or, at least, all of us still living at home. Son #1 is off at college and hadn't had this one inflicted on him at all.

タマゴリッチ! (Tamagoritchi! 'Eggs of Ostrich') -- (7 plays last March; four since) _7.3_ (no change; but up a place)
(both images by W Eric Martin)

This is still charming; quirky; delightful. Every bit as good as I'd thought last year. Very happy to have picked it up in Tokyo.

Wildcatters -- (1 play last March; none since) _7.3_ (up one place, but no change)
(images by andrespil & ghosthack)

I loved this play historically - but I wasn't sure (then - or now, for that matter) whether it was the company or the game. I think I'm leaning more toward "company" than "game" at this point; but it's something I might well pick up if I could make room on my shelves.

王宮の歩き方 (Ōkyū no arukkata 'Road to the Palace') -- (3 plays last March; one since) _7.3_ (no change, but up one place.)
(both images by sea_anemone)

This is a cool design. But it still seems like something we (collectively) are very much better at losing than at winning. We're tolerably good at poisoning something for the left opponent - but the offer is still available for the other players, too; and that balance isn't something we've done well at yet.

I still hold out hope that we'll figure this out: it has potential.

よくばりキングダム (Yokubari kingudamu 'Greedy Kingdoms') -- (3 plays last March; four since) _7_ (not nearly as enthusiastic as at first. Down four places.)
(both images by matador)

I'd initially overrated this because of the enthusiasm of son #2: he liked the dynamics, even if I was underwhelmed by the rock-paper-scissors-esque bluff & counter-bluff. Given that he's not argued for it to return to play recently, I'm perhaps down closer to where it belongs - which isn't at all terrible. But also isn't nearly as enthusiastic as last year.

Chairs -- (3 plays last March; none since) _7_ (no change.)
(images by Boomer & anevening)

Really a fun (if quite silly) thing. The lack of play is more evidence that I do not own a copy than anything else. I might well have pulled it out on occasion if I had one available.

マイス (Maisu 'Mythe') -- (3 plays last March; none since) _5_ (decreased in rating; no change in placement.)
(both images by DoubleOnad)

It's a lovely thing. And my kids would have loved this when they were younger - but it's not something that captured their interest. I expect I'll sell the copy, rather than have it continue to taunt me.

Koi Pond: A Coy Card Game -- (1 play last March; none since) _4_ (down in rating; no change in placement.)
(images by gobi & kilroy_locke)

It's pretty. But, in retrospect, I think that's all I can say in its favour. I don't think the game really works mechanically - or, at least, not in any way meaningfully different than a random activity. I've not looked to replay it.

すすめ!! 海賊さん (Susume!! Kaizoku-san) -- (4 plays last March; none since) _4_ (down a bit in rating; no change in placement.)
(images by sugorokuya & merc007)

Much like マイス, this is one that amused my youngsters momentarily, but didn't capture your interest. It's cute; minimal; very very random. And not really something that I need to play.

And a couple or four expansions - depending on how one counts. I lean toward the former...

Eminent Domain: Escalation -- (2 plays last March; none since) _6.7_ (no change)
(images by Starch & FezAZ)

I think I liked this expansion in principle, but didn't like the pace of the 5p game at all. I'd be totally content to reprise it (should the opportunity arise), but I expect I'd avoid it with the full complement of players.

Sentinels of the Multiverse: Rook City (with Ra, Horus of Two Horizons and The Eternal Haka) -- (1 play last March; none since) _5_ (no change)
(two images by Skjoldulfr & the third by logan_mann)

I've avoided a couple opportunities to play the base Sentinels game over the past year, so I expect it's completely unlikely that these will ever see play again for me. Which is fine.

Thanks again to my youngsters, my colleagues, the BAP attenders, the FridayMonday Lunch folk, and the Wednesday Night gang for some great game experiences.

Maybe a tall order for my first 18xx game, but it was on my short list and I got the opportunity to purchase it at a mid-level-OOP price, so I pulled the trigger! Can't wait, it is in the mail. I figure I'll be reading the rules and getting to know the game a bit before I get my first play in. ...I know it isn't the best criteria for a purchase, but the space theme is what nailed it down for me.

Comments:
OOP. Underrated. Attention Train Gamers. This one actually is a true variation on classical 18RR. 2038 is a space mining adaptation of the 18xx series of games. First, you have the ever important stock trading rounds followed by operating rounds where you try to deliver commodities mined from the asteroid belt. Instead of laying track, the players explore the asteroid belt and lay claims to various mining resources. During operation rounds, ships move from mine to mine limited only by their fuel and the players' refueling stations. Randomly generated map greatly increases replay value.

Staying Power: 4.94

Welcome the first new arrival to my staying power GeekList! 2038: Tycoons of the Asteroid Belt is an 18xx game, one of the very few I played before I got into 18xx in 2010. I played a single 3-player short game in 2006 with Andy Latto and Jim McCarthy, and we were powerfully mystified by it. And as you can see, my enthusiasm ramped up only slowly even after I did get interested in the 18xx family.

But the game has a lot of options, and the balance between driving stock value and building lucrative routes is an important and tricky one, and I almost made it to 5 plays in 2014. Given the length of the game, my regular play has give it enough staying power to make it onto the list, and I expect it to stay, especially now that the expansion has been made available (I PnPed a copy.)

Note: I will not be able to get shipments packaged up and out the door until two weeks after the Results are posted for this MT. If you have an urgent need and cannot wait, please do not put any of my items on your Want List as I do not want to disappoint you with a delayed delivery.

I still enjoy this more than 1846 - if only by a slim margin - but because of the length it just doesn't hit the table so often. Likely to make the list every year...
