Brad, Tony and I played a quick 3 player game of San Juan before breakfast & chapel. Tony won; Brad made it interesting; and I was completely out of contention.

This is the one game that I've almost always got in my rucksack.
We stop for a cuppa, this hits the table. It goes everywhere and plays great every time.

I like them. The new cards are just that, new cards. Some are really useful, some aren't. The Park threw us off the first time we played with the cards.

The Events change things up some, giving the players occasional different options. I like them less, but for now I will be leaving them shuffled into the deck.

I have been curious about people thoughts on if getting San Juan is a good idea, when I already own Puerto Rico?

I have been hesitant to own both, but I have a hard time getting it to the table; not much interest from others. Was hoping to see if this was similar but shorter, maybe? And worked well with 2?

This.

It's also really good when combined with the expansion from Treasure Chest which adds a little more depth to the game. Race for the Galaxy is the better game overall but San Juan is more accessible.

+1 for Treasure Chest expansion (New Buildings). We prefer San Juan + exp to Race For the Galaxy because it's so much easier to learn and play. Race is good, but it's got a heavy learning curve.

This is a favorite for 2-player games (I got it for that reason) that my son also enjoys. I don't have the expansion--I would love it, but it seems a little silly to buy the Treasure Chest expansion for several other games, only some of which we own. That said, I think it plays well for two and for three as well.

Played this loads with just two of us but had our first game with four tonight. Really different with lots of cards being drawn each turn. Makes production a very viable option.
Try it with four, you'll like it but it will make you change tactics a little.

San Juan - Rio Grande First Edition (2004) | English

Received in a previous trade. The game is in great shape. The box is gently dished/bowed on the sides, and the cards show some evidence of use. The original scorepad and pencil look barely used, all cards and tokens are accounted for and in the original insert.

Smoke free as long as I've owned it, ships free to contiguous US. I'll pay the first $8 elsewhere.

Game in good shape. Some of the sheets on the pads have been used, but not extensively.

Some wear and tear on the edges of the role cards, but not too bad that it affects gameplay.

Will ship for free, but only in CONUS

Discarding for Currency (Hand Management with a twist)

While I appreciate that this has been employed effectively in many card games devised from a traditional deck of 52 playing cards, I particularly like how the mechanic is employed in San Juan and Race for the Galaxy.

In these games, the cards in your hand offer things that you can build, colonize, etc. Each of these objects has a cost attached to it. The mechanic allows remaining cards in your hand to act as currency by discarding the number of cards equal to the value of the object you wish to deploy.

Perhaps this is simple of me to think so, but I find this mechanic to be pure genius. It allows the game designer to employ a fourth demension into the game without requiring additional pieces. For those who like to indulge their geekdom at coffee shops or bars, easy packing, quick setup and minimal real estate are critical to a fun and relaxed gaming experience. San Juan has quickly become a favorite two player game for my wife and I. I just recently purchased RTFG and except it to fill a similar role.

This mechanic is accessible to children assuming you can get passed other constraints around having a concealed hand in the first place. Once my daughter is a bit better at reading I expect to be pulling out San Juan with her regularly.

Up until here, I completely agreed with how enjoyable each mechanic is. The discarding cards to play one I feel forces players to play the most effective card, which can eventually lead to the game feeling scripted to me. Of course, that is one opinion. I still love the mechanics you listed in all the games above as well.
