This is the game I avoided for the longest time. Tile laying? Really? How can that be fun? Finally tossed it in an order I had since it was so inexpensive.
Two weeks later I ordered the big box.

I like the original of this and also a few of the expansions. Some of the expansions are horrible and each time I play I have to find the tile to the original game and go from square one. I only play the basic game now, but I have these other boxes sitting on my shelf laughing at me.

Found this, last sunday on a garage sale in a small village near Troyes (the city, not the game).
I could not believe my eyes . Usually all you can get at those kind of garage sale are crappy games from the 80's. So happy to got it since it was not in my collection.
Like new and unplayed, for only 2 euros.

And finally this. I opened the box. Counted the tiles. Once, twice, three times. Seventy one (plus the 12 from the river expansion). All 40 meeples. Well, even if it was missing one tile, I couldn't pass it up for the price.

Good couple of days for a game pimp in my neck of the woods.
I found three great games that I'll probably harvest for game pimping and PnP's.

RGG 2000 Edition. Box says that it includes the free river expansion, but the river expansion is NOT included.
Otherwise, all the base game tiles and meeples are there and in great condition.

The edition pictured is what I've got available. Includes the first "river" expansion, which was packaged with this one. I also have the "King and Scout" expansions which I'll include with this if I can find them (they came in a very small box.)
In good shape. Some shelf wear on the box.
Starting Bid: $10

Now I know what you are all thinking: "Cliche much?"
Even if you aren't, I can honestly say, I will live and die by Carcassonne. Either that or Catan, but I would only do it for Catan if I first had a complete run through marathon of Das Buch.
Yes, it has it's flaws (barely) in the fact that it can be quite hectic, confusing, and (beating the dead horse) owning up to "too many" expansions. I tend to disagree. But I could also be bias. In all seriousness, it gives so much customization! That is what drew it to me immediately as the first game after Catan I actually purchased! The expansions give it more. You can mix and match as often as you like, making it so that as long as you don't play it religiously, it'll be a different game each and every time. This is what turned me into a Euro/Worker Placement/Tile Laying/Meeple Loving fan, and what really sent me into wanting more from Board Games than just your occasional Wood for Sheep joke.
Thank you Klaus-Jürgen Wrede. I can die happy now.

It was Carcassonne.
I hesitated to take this with me, as I own it already, and I already have stacks of games for trade or gifts. But I took it with me anyway.
Carcassonne and Domaine together were EUR 4.

With Inns (Brothels?) and Cathderals and both rivers because, why not?
Best game ever of this for me. We scored by the book (With my family I score as depicted in the IOS version). I think the 2 point per mini-town and city-centric farm scoring helps make farms less important, which is a good thing. I'm probably way off though given the low play count.
Brutal tile trading more than made up for very little competition for features and the randomness or the tile draw with 5 players. I locked up most my Meep's before we were a quarter way through the game. Got a nice payoff in the end but still came last.
We tried to formalise the gentleman's agreements we started making with the yellow meeps left in the box. Things got crazy. It turned out much better than I thought.
I imagined 5 players would dilute the nastiness too much to make it much more than a co-operative building game but this was the second time I've played this way (Once with Family) and it's worked both times! First game with I+C and R2. Possibly too much river... but so pretty! Played through dinner and got very hungry.

Still waiting ...
We start looking for another game to play and Geoff shouts out ... Carcassonne? ... ooooow, yes, I haven't played that game in ages!
We played with the rivers, and inns and cathedrals expansions.
I forget what a great little game this is, the evolution of the board is fantastic and I really do like clever tile placing games. Geoff went his normal route of farms and losing all his meeples to the board as fast as he can ... BUT for a change (his words) he also racked up a few points! Martin also settled into the game very quickly and started to compete A LOT in the farm stakes! Unfortunately, I started building the worlds biggest castle with cathedral - with a lot of help from the other two and never completed it. The farm area took many twists and turns in the game with all trying to stop and then manipulate back farmlands to create one MASSIVE farmed area. In the end Geoff, with seconds (or should I say tiles) to go, managed to get a clear advantage. His win (3rd in a row now) was huge, but I think that all of us really enjoyed the game and the surprising swings within it. Martin came 2nd and wasn't too far behind and I think I was lapped by both of them ... Doh!
