Like most people, Nappy was a bunch of different ages; it depends what year we're talking about.

It's interesting that the great strategist went for a conventional ageing sequence: he was born at zero years old, after 365 days was 1 year old, and he incremented his age by one in all subsequent years.

Yes, that was an odd choice. However, recent scholarship suggests Napoleon may have missed the errata, which featured the small yet critical addition of ending the conventional aging sequence on a random die. What a game changer. Rules-lawyers like Noah and Job had been taking advantage of that loophole to keep going for 900+ years, begetting scads of multi-syllabic offspring in the process.

Of course, we are still waiting for updated errata to tell us what number that random die roll actually is.

I'm the good guys fighting for freedom (Nappy) and he is the Ancient Regime.
Just played our first battle (Battle of Bayern, a bit bigger than usual thanks to a Mud card and a really close battle thanks to the Austrian Grand Battery).
Always a nice game full of big swings!

I suspect my all time favorite is a title that I'd grant not twice to the same game if asked but as much as I can, I would for now pick this one.

My preferred scale is grand strategic. This certainly fits the bill.

The Napoleonic Wars are difficult to capture in a game if only because of the sheer charisma and genius of Napoleon-- aspects which cannot be denied any more than his many faults. This game does as good a job as any to depict these wars in a game.

Plus it's fun.

if I want to get my wargame on, this is probably the game that comes to mind first.

Strikes me that between a number of Strategic Napoleonic
games, we've gotten the topic pretty well covered. There are
light ones, as well as fairly detailed ones. Need more detailed
coverage of individual battles (I think we're pretty good
on the really light stuff - though maybe C&C style needs more),
but there are enough strategic games.

I'd like to see some of the effort put by designers into making multi-player Napoleonic games spent toward making multi-player games with military aspects for -other- periods. I haven't seen many multi-player WW1 era games, for example, and that's a period that would lend itself quite well to this instead of the old "I play all the Central Powers, the other guy plays the Allies," bit.

Agreed. Though WWI is similar to WWII in that
alliances did not out and out shift
the way they did in the Napoleonic era.

One period I'd LOVE to see handled like a EiA game (i.e. middling complexity)
is something covering the mid century crises - both
the seven years war and the austrian succession (hell, throw
bavarian succession in too).

"in print" doesn't much concern me.

Reprint the good stuff, if needed (Fighting Sail: Sea Combat in the Age of Canvas and Shot 1775-1815)

But, naval stuff tends to get short shrift.

Close Action is an amazing game for squadron and fleet actions. The odds of me getting it to the table are basically non-existent though.

Isn't there a whole-war wargame called Seas of Glory or something?

Ayup... 1805: Sea of Glory

That looks interesting.

Format: VASSAL PBEM. Don't care to use ACTS or whatever as I only play "friendly" games where trust is not an issue.

Teach? No, I am currently reading the rules for the first time.

Expertise: Looking for a fellow newbie or someone who at least won't hand my ass to me.

Could also play occasionally live by VASSAL/Skype weeknights Eastern time.

I can usually respond within 24 hours, occasionally 48. If it is just a quick response (e.g. do you want to intercept or something like that) I can probably respond during the day.

But it is an amazingly good game. Do make sure to have the revised rules.

I'd call this a good light wargame.

Borderline. Not really a CDG, in the classic

I thought this game looked really interesting when I bought it, but after trying to get through the rules I had to put it on the shelf to age for a while. 6 years later (!) I find someone who's in the same spot as me, except they've only been shelving their copy for about 3 years.

We both read the rules and I sit down to play only to find out that the rules I read aren't right anymore. There's a revised edition which we played with twice. I love the game, and now I'm left to scramble finding the revised deck and rules. I printed the rules and player aids for the revised edition, but the deck I can't do. Mail sent to mayfair to see what I can do about the situation.

The revised deck is important I think to balance out some of the more powerful cards. I can play with the cards as printed in revised set, but it's not nearly as nice.
