True story. We were playing Illuminati in high school and yours truly was playing the Gnomes of Zurich. I drew a special card -- Double your income this turn. Players of Illuminati know that the Gnomes win by accumulating a ridiculous amount of money. Unfortunately, at the time, the other players had drained my coffers and also taken the Federal Reserve. However, I had counted how much I had left, and realized that playing the card would win me the game.

No one noticed that the income phase comes *before* the draw phase. And, yes, if everyone agrees, in Illuminati you are allowed to cheat.

Anything goes. It's only a crime if you get caught. And if you get caught, you're too stupid to control the world. Interference in attacks, gifts, trades, you name it, you can do it short of an outright 'throw the game'. And if you can do it, you can undo it, or better yet, promise it and NOT do it.

Yes, but unfortunately The text of their madcap and highly enjoyable romp is NOT freely available on the Internet. There were numerous other authors I could have mentioned that have penned Lovecraftian fiction - Tierney, Shifflet, Gresh, Rimel, de Castro, de Bill, Ambuehl, Sargent, Searight, etc., etc. - but as I could NOT find any free fiction from any of them available, so they did not make the list.

Illuminati

First Edition, 1982 (Steve Jackson): 6.32 x 1680 = 10617.6
Deluxe, 1994 (Steve Jackson): 6.71 x 2742 = 18398.82

Massive: 29016.42
Average: 6.562

Latest English: 1999

Steve Jackson's card game of secret societies, betrayal, alliances, and money is a humorous take on conspiracies. Players try to take over various special interest groups on their way to world domination. Each factions win condition is different, so the game can see a bit of variation. The Deluxe edition is still readily available online.

What really makes this game rock is the absurdity of the power structure you build = the motorcycle gangs are controlled by the CIA, but what's really behind the CIA is the Post Office - the Post Office is run by the Antarctic Nazis!

It actually plays well as a strategy game. Game-wise, it could stand on its own feet without the humor, unlike Munchkin (which can be a lot of fun, but requires the humor).

Probably my first real "board game" purchase.

Great theme, but the game is S-L-O-W with 4 or 5 players.

I'd also suggest that, while it is probably AT, the game engine itself is pretty damn euro outside of the direct player screwage.

It appears the idea of expanding the game to keep the taboo current with the times is still successful. I suppose the next expansion should include a "Tea Parties" group card. I'm still trying to find a way to make a variant that includes more elements of the CCG version (countries attacked by disasters, media figures attacked by media/assassination, etc...). Until then I'm still working on a variant I call Bankrupt Illuminati.

This. Loved it when I was 13, did not enjoy it when I tried playing again recently. I think I could have stopped the player who ultimately won, but I didn't want to.

I'm all for revisiting the classics, but I'm okay with retiring this one.
