True story. We were playing Illuminati in high school and yours truly was playing the Gnomes of Zurich. I drew a special card -- Double your income this turn. Players of Illuminati know that the Gnomes win by accumulating a ridiculous amount of money. Unfortunately, at the time, the other players had drained my coffers and also taken the Federal Reserve. However, I had counted how much I had left, and realized that playing the card would win me the game.
No one noticed that the income phase comes *before* the draw phase. And, yes, if everyone agrees, in Illuminati you are allowed to cheat.

Anything goes. It's only a crime if you get caught. And if you get caught, you're too stupid to control the world. Interference in attacks, gifts, trades, you name it, you can do it short of an outright 'throw the game'. And if you can do it, you can undo it, or better yet, promise it and NOT do it.

Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson wrote the Illuminatus! trilogy which contains extensive references to Lovecraftian Mythos, other stuff in a Lovecraftian style, and HPL himself even makes an appearance in the story.

One thing for sure, it will not be Nuns on the Run. Or King of Tokyo. Or the Great Dalmuti...

Like Pacific Typhoon and Nuclear Escalation, this is a table talk game where the group you are with can make or break it. I enjoyed my games of it and I love the strange combinations you create.

First Edition, 1982 (Steve Jackson): 6.32 x 1680 = 10617.6 Deluxe, 1994 (Steve Jackson): 6.71 x 2742 = 18398.82

Steve Jackson's card game of secret societies, betrayal, alliances, and money is a humorous take on conspiracies. Players try to take over various special interest groups on their way to world domination. Each factions win condition is different, so the game can see a bit of variation. The Deluxe edition is still readily available online.

While clunky and a bit long this is still an enjoyable and engrossing card game.
Nothing much wrong with it.

Illuminati is a classic Steve Jackson (I) game of world domination. Each player takes on the role of a secret society attempting to spread its tendrils into special interest groups throughout the world.

We'd play this in the 80s and enjoyed the cool theme of having your Illuminati take over the Wargamers for nefarious purposes...

This one took me about a year to come around to. It won awards, but it looked weird. Finally, the money was burning a hole in my pocket, and me and the guys had one of our all-time great game sessions with this one.
