Done the grand campaign of this a few times.

Never in one sitting (48 hours? Maybe).
Tried at a convention, with people coming
in and out - but only got a couple centuries in.

The game mechanics focus on converting areas of different language/religion to your empire. you can also establish colonies to gradually convert areas.

The word civilian is not mentioned, but gives an interesting overview of the changing kingdoms in the Middle ages and the establishment of nation states.

Interesting typography. That typeface is a total Frankenstein combination of Blackletter and a 70's fashion magazine.

This was a GREAT gift from the wargame Santa Grogs in 2010, the Decision Games reprint of this old classic. I nearly played a game of this in Australia but somehow it never happened.

I solo'ed it twice in 2011 (scenarios, not the whole campaign). My week night game group grognards aren't interested.

Similar to the other big strategic beasts: tons of flavor, less simulation and heavy game weight.

The trend here seems to be

a) Games about art (duh!) or
b) Napoleonic wargames.

What are some that don't match these categories?

This edition

Yes, the epic from SPI. 31 years young and in very good condition. Components all present and correct, box is good, no marks on the board, etc.

Some colourblindness problems with this one, plus changing interests, so it's not likely to hit the table.

I won't be at Cancon, but I could probably get the game there. Will accept trade or cash, $80 or above.

Takes into account language, religion, civil improvements, taxation, unrest, diplomacy... and from 1980.

There are a lot of Berg games that teach a lot of history, if nothing else in the game notes to explain what was going on. Some are SPQR, Sideshow, Mediaeval.

Europa Universalis covers...everything.
Here I Stand could also qualify: religious conflict, politics...

This is a game which is almost a stripped
down representation of the political map
of europe over time. Viewed in say stop-action,
you would have a wonderful growth and collapse of
countries. This is true also of some area games
(think Civilization) but I feel this one, WITHOUT
borders and areas is actually the exemplar.

Found this SPI hiding among the puzzles. Looks like someone attempted a play in 1980, burned their brains, and booted it to the closet. Complete and the box is a bit dished.

Edition pictured. I'd say its in fair shape. The box has taken some hits and IIRC has a split corner. There are a few non-critical counters missing (tokens of which there are many duplicates). Map, counters and rules are in good shape.

Minimum bid - $40

Not enough money - people end up hoarding
the stuff (made special rules to handle this).

Not enough Claim/control markers/fortresses if
a power gets large (it wouldn't take much more -
there's a de facto limit of how big an empire
can hold together).

Not enough player counters - one scenario holds
seven players, but the counterset only comes with
pieces for six!

Which edition? I've not played enough to know from experience but my copy is SPI and I think it doesn't have this problem. Of course if it does, I have extra counters.

I'm talking the old SPI version.
For the grand campaign.

My vid treatment shows this effect (and my solution).

To be fair though, so long as hoarding is a valid
strategy, I think any reasonable amount of money would fail.

In the one seven player scenario though,
there clearly are only six colors - which is
why I made a seventh counterset.

I was given a copy of this game (SPI version) in a heavily damaged box. The lid is severely crushed and ripped with a really bad attempt to fix it with duct tape.

I'd love a new box, even just the box top.

Compared with The Sword and the Stars.

Nothing Eerie here though - the latter was designed directly
from this. Still, they're the only games which managed this
kind of system, and it's somewhat odd that it translates
from medieval europe to a galactic empire (based on the
view that stellar communications speeds would cause a
feudal-type structure, no doubt).

Empires wins, hands down though. The space game just
doesn't have the same feel - and there are some hokey
aspects. Probably the biggest issue though is the event
chits - cards are far better.

I have a cunning plan
Avatar
mbmbmbmbmb
Your mighty king conquers the surrounding kingdoms, bringing all under his sway. Then he dies without an heir. King Useless the Unready ascends the throne after a civil war and loses everything. Then you have a plague. Then a famine. Then another plague. By the end of the game, you have a tottering tower in a swamp outside Paris and a few dozen peasants scrabbling for filth and rats. And you win, because everyone else is even worse off.
