A much more popular gateway game than Stone Age, I think it's in part because it offers low low complexity, but the more you play it, the more depth you start to recognize, until it almost gets to medium depth level. Very nice!

When we played the hell out of the game there was the extra level of depth where a single move by a n00b would pretty much give away their ticket. I'm not there anymore, especially with the 1910 expansion, but it was pretty cool to feel like an expert at something for a short fleeting moment.

If you play this game in a cutthroat way I would say the depth easily is at a medium level. Unfortunately my groups tend to play it in a friendly way so it stays in the light range for me.

I love this one as it can happen even if you are not playing Cutthroat and you take a small section of track just before they do. Which can also backfire as they end up with the longest route by having to make that detour.

Now, if I could only get her to stop calling it "Let It Ride."

Nope, this isn't about me buying TTR. Instead this is about how, when she asked me what I wanted for my birthday and I said a trip to a games convention in Germany, she bought the flight tickets and booked the hotels. Awesome (even if she did get a bit overwhelmed by the crowds)

I don't really like this North American board for 2-player. As there is a lot of room with only 2 players, the winner ends up being the one who gets the most east-west routes which are worth more points and have more valuable connections. Its much different (better) with more people. I bought the expansions with the Switzerland and India board to try a board designed for fewer players.

agreed. but sometimes we just want a fun, nonconfrontational game. this fits the bill very nicely. and you can tweak a bit to make it more interactive -- like obviously the rule that double routes can not both be taken in a 2 player game.

about Switzerland - we don't play it much (but do have it), but i have read concerns about there being a winning strategy - involving a specific combo of country-to-country routes or somesuch? can't recall for sure...

Basically a set collection game at its heart. I'd think this might work, though it typically runs about 45 minutes.

Great idea for a list. Good luck both with finding games and with introducing them. If you're updating the list after introducing the games, let us know how successful each game is.

Not to sidetrack the list or anything, but there are tournaments there. That's just not why most people go.

1. If you want to play a game, that game is there.

2. If you want people to play that game with you, there are people there who will play the game with your.

3. The people are awesome. Everyone there is a nuts about games as you.

4. If you are talking about board games, the flea market and virtual flea market are better than any convention merchants' room I've ever seen.

Both San Juan (under the name Condado, with expansions now) and Dominion (under the name Androminion, with all card sets) are free with mildly challenging AI players. You might also check out "Pirates and Traders." It's built along the lines of Merchants and Marauders, but for a single player in a sort of "role playing game" style. It has a free and a paid version, but the free version is quite good on its own.

While it's neither a euro nor for solo play, I'd recommend getting the droidippy app - it's an android and web-browser based Diplomacy server. For free you can play a single game at a time, with a paid membership you can be in numerous games at once. You can join random games which will always start once 7 players are ready, and moves are generally due every 24 hours. The interface is pretty decent, and you can adjust the nation colors to your liking. THe service keeps track of your reliability (how many times you enter orders on time vs. miss orders), and the more reliable you are the better chances the other players in your game will be as well. So your first couple of games you might have players who flake and never move, but after that it should kick you into higher level games.

The go to game of the moment, we could easily knock out 2-3 games of this in a sitting, even with our daughter who tends to think about her moves pretty carefully. She's pretty much playing this game on her own now, planning routes and trashing route cards to get new ones to match up for her and a few plays into it she has started trying to block my routes, although she still won't go after Mom, even though she is the better player. My wife loves this game and would probably play it almost any time she is asked to play. After a lot of plays, I finally got my first win in this last weekend, go me!

We have added the 1910 expansion to this as well.

My 6 year old likes ticket to ride. He hasn't figured out how to maximize his points yet but the colour coding (he needs 4 red cards to make a red connection with 4 spaces, for instance) is easy for him to figure out.

Oh yeah, I forgot to add this.

We play with modified rules.
Everyone's hands are face up and we only have one ticket at a time. We label his tickets on the board with pennies. We help him out to let him know what his options are.

We have this but not tried it with children yet. May give it a go.
