As mentionned in this geeklist the original El Grande theme wasw trojan war, and the castillo was indeed the trojan horse. I would definitely buy a trojan version of El Grande

I already have El Grande but would most definitely buy another copy if it was cyberpunk rethemed. Every player would play as a hacker. The board would represent a computer system and its partitions. Cubes played would be bits representing a player gaining control of a given section of the mainframe, with the castillo actually being a trojan horse virus that anyone could use to attack partitions. The king would represent systems security.

I was thinking of this one as well because a lot of thing don't make thematic sense in this game:
1) why do you enter map next to the King, but not where the King is and why doesn't adjacency to your figures matter?
2) What's with the Ibiza paratroopers?

The only answer to (1) I've found is Protest/Revolution theme.
- we are different factions, trying to get influence in the city
- the King is the Police. You want to be near it, so you can protest, and throw stuff at them, but you can't really be exactly where police is.
- Castillo is the underground/metro. Makes more sense.

Something alongside this also crossed my mind. Very similar actually.

The only thing against it is how to make an interesting map: to make sense thematically and to make sense that each part is of a different value. (Disk partitions don't look that interesting, must be different part of a system, but not everything can be influenced/infested).

I played El Grande for the first time in December 2010. The BGG top 20 that I had played were:

Agricola - I rate it a 5, a lot of my friends really like it, I just don't care for it

Puerto Rico - I rated it a 6 for a long time, partly because my wife hates it and only 2 others in my group would play, and once I learned the building strategy I couldn't be beaten in a 3 player game by them. I traded it away to a local BGGer who, in all probability, will be a friend until death, so I consider it my best trade ever (we met to make this trade). I have since played it at another friends house with more than 3 players and have grown to like it more than a 6 rating.

Race for the Galaxy - I played at GenCon in 2009, found all the icons confusing, rate it a 3.

Tigris & Euphrates - a friend brought his copy over and taught it to me. I see how it appeals to gamers, but it seemed dry to me. I rated it a 4.

I had not played Power Grid at that time. I played 3 months later and enjoyed it as well.

Just had to post here to say it's brilliant to find a friend like that. Goes far beyond gaming as I'm sure you know.

I've only played this twice so far, but I think this is close to the low-medium complexity and medium-high depth goal. I think the complexity is low enough you could try it with non-gamers, but I haven't tried that myself yet.

This one could be politics, with MP from different political parties fighting for seats/power in the Parliament.

Or how about Real Estate? It was quite popular not so long ago to have a huge portfolio of properties by just paying interest on your mortgages, then renting them and/or selling them for profit.

One of our first large online orders included this game. We play it two player, which some find not so good but we find perfect! Another Euro style game that we hold dear in our collection.

What we like about it: It is our first real "Euro Game". The mechanics felt very varied and appropriate to the idea. It has that Spanish theme, kind of reminiscent of our high school history class. It strikes a really good balance between complexity and playtime too.

The think about it being "better" with a full five is because there is a lot more tension during the bidding phase. However, I find the game just as entertaining and not less interesting. Now, instead of having the tough call of how much to bid, you also have to consider what actions you leave on the table.

Another element that helps build up some complexity with more players is "El Castillo", because you now have to keep track of how many cubes each player placed. With two that is a lot simpler.

So, yes, this is a great game with five, but with two is well worth it.

Got to start off the day w/ my fave game of my fave mechanic. I got off to a good start, but in the 3rd round, JC's King blocked me from removing 2 useless cabs. So I had to remove 3 very useful ones instead. That made the difference between 2nd (JC) and 3rd (moi). Of course, Jean demolished everyone. Maida was new to El Grande, but gracefully took her lumps.

36 Pandemic vs. 13 El Grande

Second Round: d. Ra 578-457
First Round: d. Space Alert 635-410

Comment: El Grande extended its series lead over Ra to 3-0. This old gentlemen continues to quietly push through the brackets. It will also overtake Tigris & Euphrates for the 5th best record in the competition.

Never seen this happen. As often as this complaint is used, I think its occurrence is quite rare. And when it does happen, it's the fault of the know-it-all gamer, not the cooperative genre.

You've never seen it happen because it requires a gamer who is both hardcore about analytical strategy and lacking basic self-awareness, and that combination makes it quite unlikely that such a person is even trying to introduce new people to games, or that they are succeeding irrespective of a game's cooperative / competitive win conditions.

Gaming will never be the same.

I've never understood the complete disdain some people have for co-op games. Co-ops are great for the hobby. My wife hates board games. I bought Pandemic and convinced her to play. We quickly lost, and she immediately wanted to play again. We introduced it to at least 4 other couples, none of which play board games, and they all raved about it. One couple went out and bought their own copy, and another recently asked to borrow my copy so they could play it with some of their other friends.

Heaven forbid we have games out there that attract new (and different) people to the hobby.
It's like how people complain how certain Nintendo Wii games, Flash based games, and iOS games aren't real "gamers games" like for PS3 and Xbox 360. Well, it's hard to argue how much of the nongamer market they were able to attract (they're making $$ off a segment of the market that by definition wasn't supposed to be using their products in the first place) and games like Pandemic to fill that void.

We all have our "metagames". One person who finds fully co-ops pointless for the same reasons suggested vby others here did admit that he got alot of enjoyment in buying a new game, sleeving the cards, bagging the components, and then never playing with it again. However, he wasn't collecting that game. He really wanted it played, but it was a bit "shameful" as he could've done a better job of trying to get it played all those years he had it.

I find myself agreeing with both of the sentiments expressed by these two fellow-bggers. And I'm not really feeling conflicted about it either.

Rio Grande English First Edition (1996). Game is complete except for the rules. I've printed out a copy. Otherwise, all game materials are present and in very good condition. The game is showing some shelf and edgewear and one corner of the box lid has a noticeable dent/blemish that has caused some of the box cover art to tear away from the box (but overall box integrity is still good and the blemish is a little less than the size of a dime).

I will ship for free to the US and cover the first $12 elsewhere.

Yah probably the toughest call for me in this round so far, but Ra just plays faster and more easily so gonna give it the thumb this time, while still confident that ElG will move onto the next round. No losers here.

Agreed. Another matchup of stuff I enjoy, so I can vote for one of these and still feel clean about it.
