Exploration

Lost Valley is cool because you don't know what the board/world will be like. More exploration games would be great.

+1, there haven't been many good exploration games really. It used to be a more common theme but not much lately. Personally, I like my exploration with ships, but I can settle for whatever we get.

Yes, totally agree here - just flat out sandbox exploration fun.

I have actually just bought a copy of Lost Valley from the marketplace, can't wait for it to get here.

I love the exploration theme. Discovery is nearly a great game. But nearly doesn't count.

If you're just referring to games in which the board or layout of the board is slowly revealed as the players progress through it, then there are plenty of games utilizing that mechanic. Most of the ones I'm thinking of are Ameritrash, so if you're a Euro fan, you're going to run into them far less. Betrayal at House on the Hill comes to mind, as does Descent.

Betrayal at House on the Hill is what comes to mind for me with this mechanic, and I'd love to see that exact idea in a Euro game... it shouldn't be hard, with all the "discovery of X" themes there are!

Players are prospectors in the Klondike. The game is played on an expanding map of rhombuses and triangles. Players move along the edges of the tiles, trying to accumulate the most gold nuggets. The triangular tiles contain special locations such as trade posts, Indian villages and river sources.

Players start with limited equipment and must collect resources from the board and pay money to improve the equipment. Better equipment decreases risk but costs nuggets and never completely eliminates risk. Exploitation of local resources will cause players to move farther afield and require better types of transportation (horses, carts, canoes).

Lost Valley is a really good game. I enjoy how you must keep a close watch on all your opponents. It can often be a game of taking advantage of the work the other players have done. This can sometime make it bog down a bit if players don't think they will benefit enough from certain actions. A few design choices may have also been sacrificed in order to enhance the experiential play style of the game. But nevertheless, I will not hesitate to pull this out in the future. I'm already thinking about things I'll try next time. That's another great thing about it: there are many, many things you could try.

Anyways, it just barely missed out on my top ten new games of the year, and if I think about it longer it might creep up a bit.

Much like Carcassonne and El Caballero, I think the map which emerges during a game of Lost Valley is very attractive. There is something about the chaotic meanderings of the river that adds great visual appeal and strongly reinforces the theme of exploration.

This is starting to feel like a long lost love. It's been years since I last played it, yet it is the best exploration game I know. Some people don't take to it because turns are so short and in the beginning it can feel like it's going nowhere. But there are two things to realize: Turns are short for everyone, and you can't win this game on your own.

Other than that, it is thematic, well produced, entertaining and always a surprise who gets the gold first. I need to get another play in soon!
