Bought this when it first came out and played it once. I liked it, but played it with four people instead of two and it wasn't the greatest experience.

I sold the game for a huge profit when it was out-of-print and used that money to go to San Diego Comic Con.

Then a few years ago, when I started hitting board gaming hard I realized that I really wanted the game again, so I found a used copy--I had to trade quite a bit to get it. Then they printed the second edition and I face palmed.

War of the Ring (first edition)
D&D 5e - Hosted my first adventure

War of the Ring (first edition)
There was no game night this week, but on Friday just as I logged into Facebook, I got a message "Are you going to 'x' convention this weekend?" I wasn't. "So you're coming over to play War of the Ring with me, right?" And so I did. Apparently neither of us realized that our off-Fridays coincided.

We played his first edition copy, he wants to play 1e then 2e to be able to compare the two. All in all it took 4.5 hours, but gameplay was probably around 2+. The units hadn't been sorted, so first I had to sort out all the units into their respective armies, and then set up the board. With some distractions, this surprisingly took me 45 minutes to an hour to do. Then rules explanation was slow (distractions as they had people working on the house, and two kids running around) but also cause I had to refresh my memory on a few things, and make sure I knew the 1e differences on a few things. But we got through it, starting pretty late though, after 2. We finished with military victory for Sauron (me) around 430, and then I had to book it home to get other stuff done.

I went for my typical strategy of bring out Saruman and recruit lots of Isengard units, then take out Rohan. I got him backed up to the last settlement where he got a lot of units mustered and I didn't have enough to finish him off, but he'd have a hard time pushing back, so I held there while I moved my fight elsewhere. I had a lot of high-unit mustering cards, so I populated lots of trolls and goblins in Moria and the other area near Lothlorien. I ended up taking that and Rivendell pretty handily. My opponent wasn't getting too many character dice, and when he finally got himself in a position eligible to get Gandalf out, he wasn't getting any character dice or will of the west dice, so turns for him were rough. Eventually, I'd maneuvered my Sauron forces in the east to take on Gondor. There was a big battle where I barely touched anything and lost lots of units myself, but then I finally brought the Southerlings and Easterlings to war, combined troops into a large army, and moved in. He reinforced the eastern part of Gondor, but I merely took the south and west for the win. He really wanted one last epic battle, but it was getting late to where I had to leave, so I wanted somewhere more likely to succeed, and I ended up using 4 dice to win the last battle and only had 1 or 2 guys left alive.

It was fun to play again. I'd realized afterwards that was my fifth game, and there's only one person I'd ever played with a second time (according to my logs anyways).

Dragon Dice
On Sunday, I planned to meet with a friend to teach him Dragon Dice. I was happy he obliged me. So I built a demo army just to teach the basics (he complained about his lack of saves as Dwarves, but it did a great job of teaching the 80% of the rules with 20% of effort). Then I also started building various other armies to start introducing more complex rules and interactions. I was acting quickly when I did so, so I realized I made them too complex in most situations, it was almost information overload, but he handled it well. He enjoyed the game and would play it with me again, so I consider it a win. We'll see what the future holds, though, as I've successfully taught so many people, but unsuccessfully gotten it to the table repeatedly.

D&D 5e - Hosted my first adventure
For those who have been following, I've been playing D&D 5e. The story has progressed where we traveled to a town in aid, rid their mines of corrupted guards and saved the lives of the few miners left, got chased out of town by guards, found our way into and cleared an abandoned wizard's tower by solving its puzzles and riddles, while simultaneously ending the persistent magic that caused ships to sink, then returned to town where we faced the corrupted guards overthrowing the town and we saved the town and the mayor (barely).

At this point, the DM and I switched roles and I am now running the campaign, continuing this story. Because the DM won't be with us for too much longer, and I won't be with us for too much longer (or at least will be unreliable in attendance), I invited another player experienced in playing and DMing, and he invited his brother in law. So I needed to introduce 3 PCs (rolling up 2 of them), and get rid of one PC (mine), introduce a story hook into the next segment of the campaign, and prep the full adventure for that story hook.

Fortunately, the characters thing worked perfectly into the story. My rogue was already dissatisfied for various reasons, and some of the things we discovered appealed to him enough that he's departing on his own now to study these magics we've been discovering. The new characters were a bard sent over by our noble character's lord to record the hero's feats, and several guards were sent over for protection, which is convenient because the town no longer has any guards, and two of them became PCs. Although, the brother-in-law never came, everybody shared control of his character, doing whatever was best for the group.

I didn't have much time to finish everything I'd needed to, so it was a bit rushed and haphazard. I spent several hours looking over the systems and formulas for making a balanced encounter for an adventuring party until I'd understood it all (considering I'm effectively new to DMing since I've not actually run any adventures since Middle School, and never had players who were reliable enough to get a second play out of, and would derail campaigns in one session much more than you'd see these comedic webcomics derail sessions). I opted for a simple hook sent by missive by the Lord via the bard of rumors of bandits forming in this ruinous city, just a ways away from where the PCs were at. The brigands were mostly easy encounters, but the beasts and creatures the players were facing "randomly" (but in a way fitting to the story) were definitely a challenge.

We didn't quite finish, the biggest piece is still ahead. Basically, the brigands have some doors barred, something is behind it (they heard slithering), and they've learned that the brigands were waiting for someone before approaching the doors. Everybody says they had a lot of fun, so I'm pleased with how I did. But now I need to spend more time fleshing out the story hooks, the overarching campaign plot, and tying it all together. And prepare the next adventure, or at least the start of it.

After Deep Sea Adventure I was in the mood for a heavy long game. I ran into Jeff who wanted to play a game of War of the Ring.

The setup took longer then I thought it would. This was the first time either of had played so the first few turns took longer but it started to pick up after that. It did take awhile to play the game and I wasnt sure if I should go for a military victory or try and corrupt the ring bearer.

I would be willing to get it another go to see how it feels after knowing the rules.

Winner: Me

Andy and I get together every year to play this most excellent of games! We did miss one year, so this is our 6th time we've played against each other. Since Andy had played Shadow last year, I took them this year. We also threw in the Lords of Middle-earth expansion. I really put the pressure on early and got some lucky draws of the 3 tiles, quickly giving Frodo 6 corruption when the Fellowship attempted to travel through Moria with the Balrog there. Oh yeah, and Pippin apparently died on the front porch of Bag End. After that, I mobilized Mordor and man-handled Minas Tirith, but then Andy started strong arming and rushing to the Mountain. He got on the Mordor track, but I snagged Dale for the 10th point. He took it back, but I had all 10 of my dice in play, and was able to go back door on him and snag the last needed victory point and get the win!

Adam/Shadow - Win
Andy/Free Peoples - Loss

History:
Shadow - 6
Free Peoples - 0
Adam - 4
Andy - 2

*Wow. Didn't realize until I looked back at previous Geeklists that we've never had the Free Peoples win.

Remember, how I was happy that someone else was running the Netrunner tourney? Yeah, well during this time I got a text from Nick Little, telling me to call Kathleen. Turns out that someone that was supposed to run the tourney was me! I apparently had signed up to do so in November and completely forgot. Kathleen was awesome, forgave me, someone stepped up and ran it. It was the first event of Geekway and I got it off to a bad start, but she did an excellent job with all the events, and also an excellent job of teasing me throughout the con for starting it off with a missed event!

Unsure whether to even include this as I own and have played the second edition. Because of that, this is the only game on this list which I have pretty much zero interest in trying. My only motivation would be to scratch off one entry from this list.

Highly rated games (by the general public) that dropped off the list:

Crokinole out from #37 (new rank #55). This is a lot of fun, but maybe dexterity isn't what stats fans go for first?

7 Wonders plummets thirty spots down and leaves the list.

YINSCH and DVONN both leave the list. The abstracts had a place in the hearts of stats fans, but not enough in this bigger audience.

War of the Ring just misses the cut, from #33 to #46.
