Plays great with 5,6 or 7. Has a fantastic alliance mechanism which adds a neat layer of strategy to this area control game.

I've only played this game once. But it was a good enough session for me to regard it as one of my favorites. Wallace built a really great interactive map-conquest game here. The mechanisms are so smart and tense. I especially enjoy the alliance mechanism. Only Wallace would implement such a twist into a game like this. I also like the simple and elegant dice combat. More games should use something similar, IMO.

Struggle of Empires x1
This colonization themed game is a difficult game to rate after one play. The game is an area majority, conflict game over three phases. The in game decisions around special abilities, unit creation, movement and economics are difficult and seem to have a range of subtlety and nuance. This is pure Martin Wallace, 'black cubes', two actions per turn stuff, slightly dry in presentation whilst still being thematic in play and with enough weird rules to keep you coming back to the rulebook. This is the type of game I love but it is long and the production quality could be higher but those are minor issues once get to know the game.

My primary concern is that these decisions might be overshadowed by the alliance phase where players bid to place each other into one of two temporary alliances, the outcomes of which can make or break any strategy. It is also possible to be knocked out of the running and still have to play for another hour or two. As games for up to 7 players go this is awesome, and it didn't hurt my opinion that I scraped a 1 point victory.

Whilst it's a shame we won't be seeing the more accessible(?) Age of Reason anytime soon this original is well worth your time.

Helvetia x2
An interesting take on the classic euro with a focus on incentive manipulation, grabbing of first-to-do-X VP chips across scattered across a tech tree, all around a bone dry Swiss theme.

Serengeti x1
I think this game has too much going on for the # of cards/timeframe and as such doesn't quite have enough control to be interesting in the long term. That said I enjoyed it and would happily play it again.

Middle-Earth Quest x1
MEQ is an adventure style game where players attempt to complete secret missions and the bad guy tries to spread prevent them by spreading his corrupting influence.
I love how it creates a sense of adventure, complete with dramatic twists and interesting outcomes. I would love to see this on a larger scale with say 6 heroes and 2 bad guys all out and about doing there own thing. The pre-book setting is perfect for creating tales without relying on too many of the usual ME tropes.

The primary problem lies in the downtime created by the difficulty of analyzing card options along with the turn sequence. Some form of simultaneous play or partial turns would have helped greatly. A close second are the weird game end conditions which make no sense to me. I'd rather just leave it undecided. As it stands the game just takes too long to get much play but it's a wonderful experience.

Parade x1
Pretty cool card avoidance, majorities game with a wide player count and decent opportunities for good play.

I didn't play a lot of games this past June and I only played 2 new-to-me games, but they were VERY good which is what you want!

Struggle of Empires- This was probably my favorite of the two, but I feel like there's a lot about this game that a long time Age of Steam fan would appreciate. Mainly the turn order/alliance bidding. It creates a lot of tension and can make for some really interesting board states as the game goes on. We played a 5 player game (slowly) in about 4 hours. I can imagine it being a bit faster but I can also see it getting fairly diplomacy heavy. It doesn't matter as it's well worth the time investment.

Volko Rhunke was in town and so we had a chance to have him run us through Falling Sky: The Gallic Revolt Against Caesar. I had been putting together my own copy, so I was a little familiar with it, but this was a great introduction. I thought this was a really fantastic addition to the COIN series and we had a great time playing and talking with Volko.

Had a game of Struggle of Empires this week. My empire (France) struggled mightily, never getting going and struggling to a sixth-place finish (out of six), abetted by my uncanny ability to roll '7' in nearly every combat (which is bad). It's a cool game, though.

A session of Empires in Arms with no Turkish battles, but plenty of other action.

What else? PBEM games dithering along. I don't believe I am up in any of them...

This was my first play of Martin Wallace's game of eighteenth century warring European powers. As a three player game (Daniel, Roy, and me), with three wars, and an enforced alliance each turn, the 2 vs 1 dynamic dominated somewhat. I stumbled a bit in the first turns until I realised battles were only worth it once you had overwhelming odds making victory likely. We were each alone 1 turn in 3, which was damage mitigation time. By the final turn, Roy was ahead, having been in two alliances, and Daniel and I tried desperately to drive him off the board and catch up with his point total. We failed, Roy victorious, Daniel having caught up massively but not quite enough to catch Roy, and me in third place having lost points from having the most unrest in my Spanish empire.

Good game, 7/10 from me, but I'd prefer to play with 4 or 5 I think, not sure 3 player is where it shines.

Castles continues to be a fun game to play. However, the skill gap is clearly an issue. While my group had different winners the first few times, I've become the winner of the last 5 games, because I've got the most experience with it now. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Struggle of Empires was the big game of the week. We had five players, which is the fewest I would play with. None of us are experienced enough to really know how/why to manipulate alliances; for my own part, I was the last person to choose teams, which meant I was on the first team of 3 people. Since there were no slavers out, I was fine with going last. The rest of the match was particularly weird because no slave tokens ever came up.

One of the guys came out to a roaring lead, solidifying a position in every European country. I was able to lock him out of the Americas, but had almost no foothold in Europe myself. For once I decided against any army/navy training; I bought a single Navigation tile, but otherwise took money tokens as opposed to combat technologies. While that did not help in the first few rounds, the last war consisted of almost everyone else taking Governmental Reform, while I could continue attacking and taking territory. This propelled me to a massive lead in the end.

RFTG, Puzzle Strike, Legendary, and Dungeon Dice were all online matches. My coworker who used to game with my family convinced me to buy Tabletop Simulator. The interface is a bit weird, but I was honestly impressed with it. They basically just put objects on a board, and it's up to you to actually know/play the game. In that sense, it's a very precise way to play games online. I learned that apparently my coworker really likes deck builders; I'll have to find out what other things are available and have him play games I actually enjoy next time.

Finally, one of my wife's friends from our undergrad is visiting us currently, and those are what the TtR and The Duke plays are from. She plays games regularly with her family (the usual gateways of Catan, TtR, some Betrayal at House on the Hill) so I went out on a limb with The Duke. She liked it a lot. After a few quick games where I captured her Duke, our third match was a nice long 30+ minute game where she got to actually see and use most of her pieces. While I did best her in the end, there were a few very close moments in the game. I wouldn't be surprised to see her pick up a copy to show her brothers the game.
