Not as long as you might think - I've got fancy tools to help me do some of this work.
What really took a long time were the little player pieces. Cutting them, drilling them, cutting them again because I felt they were too long, drilling them again, sanding them...little bits are the bain of my existance!
Love your avatar. I watched three movies in the past week with John Cleese in them -- Silverado, A Fish Called Wanda, and Fierce Creatures -- some of my favorites. The guy was a genius!
How did you do the pegs on the little pieces? I'm thinking about making this myself, and think that is a must for when the pegs can stack.
The player pieces are 3/4" maple dowels, cut to ~ 5/8" long, drilled top and bottom with a 5/16" dowel (glue pin) in one end. To drill on center, I clamped a piece of 3/4" MDF to the drill press table, drilled a 3/4" hole in it, then chucked-up the 5/16" brad point drill bit. It's handy to keep a short stick nearby for the few pieces that want to spin while being drilled.

Also, what did you do for the numbers in the holes? It looks too nice to be hand written.
I took it to a local business laser engraver, who's done work for me in the past.
