Holy cow! My family had that exact timer when I was a kid!

The reason there is a phone in the lucite is it was supposed to be a phone timer. When bratty teenagers in the '70's were tying up the phone lines, they were supposed to flip this timer in order to limit their time on the phone.

Wow, that whole concept is barely even conceivable today.
