sounds from the notes as if you're allowing slaps on split pairs, which is not how I ever played. Now I have to see which version of the rules BGG goes by.
Several of the times I've played with, we've played the split pairs rule (which has always been called the "sandwich" rule). Some people play with it and some without it.

The reason "no one notices" the slap possibilities (which will almost never happen in a real game) is that I managed to TOTALLY forget about slapping (I know, seriously!) when I was making this image. I only remembered it at the end, at which point I didn't want to retake the photo with slapping involved.
