I could be mistaken but I assume he used a gloss varnish or gloss finish (or perhaps high gloss even).

I agree, they are some nicely painted minis and I wish I had some like them in my BattleCry set.

I dip them into "Minwax" walnut stain varnish.
I find it a fast way to paint minis, the stain fills the voids and then dries to a very hard finish.

Did you use acrylic paint? And did the Minwax adversely affect whatever paint you did use?

Black Acrylic paint and Future Floorwax also works well for this kind of effect. Mix it about 1 to 5 paint to future. It's been a standard quick washing method to draw out some detail for many years. I prefer to paint and shade but this is a great idea when you have a ton of miniatures to put out on the table.

Obtain maybe the wrong word here, since I can't see any reason anyone would want to have that effect on the pieces.. There are however matt varnish spray out there that counter the glossy effect!

Yes acrylic paint, same paint I use for tole painting.
