This is how my game looks with limited mount of miniatures. Only Heroes/Minions are presented as miniatures. I printed the armycounters and inserted them in wooden bases with 2-sided tape.
Yog-Sothoth knows the gate. Yog-Sothoth is the gate. Yog-Sothoth is the key and guardian of the gate. Past, present, future, all are one in Yog-Sothoth. He knows where the Old Ones broke through of old, and where They shall break through again.
Thats a great space saving idea and it look cool too.
Wow! I agree with the above comments. I like miniatures, but sometimes they can be too much. Counters makes far more sense for mass units in this game. Well done!
If you are interested, please go and check "recent"-pictures. In there you can find a new picture showing how I made my armycounters and another picture showing the graphics that I used to make my counters (with good resolution ).
Wow, that looks fantastic! I am totally going to do this with my set. I really think that FFG should have done this in the first place - it looks so much better than the cheap plastic minis. I am in awe over how professional your counters look - the graphics are amazing! I would be tempted to replace the political counters as well - they can be hard to distinguish, but yours are so clear! Great job!
Actually I remade the "political"-tokens too. I used the same nation symbols that I used in my armycounters= makes sense The colour of unactivated nation is toned down and the activated side of the token is bright coloured.
1. Where have you got the wooden rod? Or where can I get?
= Contact your local hobbystore /hardwarestore for rod. I used 18mm & 12mm thick rod. Printed stickers leave 1mm rim of wooden base showing.
2. How many army counters have you done overall?
=Two whole sets. One for my self & one for my friend. Like I mentioned in one previous message “Use machine to cut the rod in slices” to save your sanity and maintain standard quality
3. Which height have the army counters?
= Each counter is 3.5mm high
4. Have you printed the paper with a normal printer or why do they look so beautiful?
=I used normal Canon laser printer. Paper was thick and nonglossy. The picture resolution was quite high too.
5. Whats about laminating? Looks that good or rather bad?
= At the time I was so busy finishing my armies that I didn’t try laminating. But please try it out. It might work really nicely.
6. Would you load up a pic of your political counters and post the link here?
=OK. Look for “Resent pictures”. I will send it in this week (in good resolution so you can copy paste the counters)
Looks awesome, bravo. I'd really like to know where you got the Dark Riders? [The dorsal-fin-looking flat-wing of the original Nazgul make them the worst sculpt in the entire series.]
Yep. Since I game with homemade armycounters I turned (corrupted) some of the Elven Elites to Ringwraiths. Elven riders are perfect for the task, since they are wearing hoods.
= Cut the flag away & curve the face off. Use drybrush technique with black and gray paint to turn them to Black riders
I don't want happiness by halves, nor is half of sorrow what I want. Yet there's a pillow I would share, where gently pressed against a cheek like a helpless star, a falling star, a ring glimmers on the finger of a hand.
Superb. I agree with everyone else, this is how the game should be played. FFG are you watching?
Mikko, I want to thank you for providing your pics of these pieces, as well as the artwork. I made a complete set earlier this year and it really turned out well. I think it looks much better than the game does with the miniatures, and is far more functional (no crowding). I used a slightly different scheme (using 3 different sizes of wood instead of two - one for regs, one for elites, and one for leaders; and a different paint scheme), but I would have never even thought to do it without seeing your posting. Now I have to make another set for the BoTA expansion. Because the Ents, Corsairs, and Seige Engines looks so cool, and there are so few of them, i'll likely just use those pieces and only make new wooden pieces for the Dunlendings, so it won't be too big of a deal. Thanks again!
I understand that many people consider using counters instead of miniatures at FFG & GWS games as a form of heresy.
The figures with this game are really well made, and I enjoyed painting the Heroes & Evil Minions. Combining them to army counters worked really well for me. But as the saying goes: "Each for his own"
"Is there a reason to have two different sides on a counter that I have not figured out yet...? "
All army counters have graphics only at one side. Maybe you mean graphics that I used with Political counters? At political counters the darker color means that the nation is activated & lighter color that the nation is still at unactivated state.
This looks really slick! I may have to give this idea serious thought instead of trying to paint all those minis or paying someone. Thanks for posting this!
