Great map. Did you consider letting the paper texture show through? I think it might give it that extra polish to bring this from a great to a superb map.

The different colors refer to the different regions of ancient/feudal Japan under the Gokishichido government and administrative system that exited in the time period of this game (and have been replaced by the province/prefecture system that exists today). I believe the individual shades in each color region are simply just to contrast the individual province territories (artistic license, no further meaning).

Great map!

Maybe coloured territories could be used in some kind of variant with smaller goals like: "conquer all territories in a specific region"...

I would really like to add more historical feeling to this game.
