I understand the cost savings, but different kind of models for the different colors would have been cool.
Well, you know in *theme* this is all one kingdom vying for power, each duke using the political and economic power to take the empire and it would have.... ah heck, you're right.
Just as an asthetic choice, why wings for space craft? Do they also dip into the atmosphere, ala the shuttle? Also with wings, you limit the amount of area your guns/weapons can traverse in a 3d arc. Or since they lie (lay?) in a 2d format was it simpler to go with wings?

They were inspired by Stephen Hickman - the artists who did the box cover. It's that retro/art deco look we were going for - like ships from Buck Rogers. It gives the game a unique feel I think. When I imagine them in space, I hear that grinding engine noise from SW Episode I/II. The Dreadnaught is extremely noisy, almost thundering when it approaches.
Of course in space, no one can hear any of this. So it's mainly just my imagination.

I like the sculpts for TI because they look like Tie fighters/bombers and Battle stars.
While I like the TI ships, too, one thing that I've seen some minor criticism for is that they AREN'T "original", but that the Dreadnought looks like a Star Destroyer, the War Sun is a Death Star, the fighters are Star-Wars-looking, and the Cruiser looks like a Battle Star.
There are many ship designs to choose from; no need to keep rehashing the same ship style over and over, even if they are cool

The more people playing, the more variety of ships are in the game... and since the ships are not drasticly different in size, it would be difficult at a glance to tell what class of ship or how powerful the ship is, unless you have a point of refernce right next to it. If its uniform, all you need to do is memorize one set of ships and you automatically know the class of ship.
This game hit my radar and fell off a few months ago, and it's creeping back in now; have to wonder, anyone else look at this fleet of plastic and immediately think about getting out some paint? Some damned cool pimping potential here.
