I figured that I would answer a few of the mysteries for yall.
Ok, the candies are leftovers from a gingerbread house, so I'm not sure exactly -what- they are they're shiny and spherical and were numerous enough to do the whole board, even after some were lost in combat -mmm-.
The layout of the pieces was actually modeled after the typical mid-game of the four of us who play. My friend Troy plays the Iron-grip of the reds (always starting from Asia) and often smokes a cigar when he takes over Central America (ie. Cuba). The other pieces are typical of the rest of our strongholds mid-game.
Yes, the dice are actually cubes made of the same cake, and individually iced. Five of six sides were dotted as per real dice. The red dice had to be left off of the cake due to the amount of red dye, they would have bled into the colours on the cake.
The entire cake was made from two 9x13 inch sheetcakes, one vanilla and one chocolate. Regular icing an a lot of experimentation led to the colors. The base-colors are actually done in relief to match mountain ranges in real life.
It was very fun to make, three of the four regular players made it for the fourth's birthday.
