The coins here are actually better than the original 1st edition Caylus coins. Even the smallest size in AoS is thicker and has more weight.

Either way, we used them one time, and immediately switched to actual change for all subsequent games.

I've played AoS exactly one time, and it was the reprint of the 2nd Edition (with the plastic trains and paper money.) I'm not sure I'm going to be content with the chips instead of the paper money. Should I go ahead and get the same edition I played or get the newest one?

Poker chips, honestly. Neither the little odd-sized plastic coins or paper money comes close and AoS is a lot closer to a Euro than 18xx in its money requirements.
