Travel Ticket to Ride - I wanted to create a travel T2R so I printed off a smaller map (16"x24") and laminated it. Then I created 4 "train cards" with 45 trains on each and laminated those. I use overhead markers to mark the tracks.

Do you just use the normal small deck of cards?

This is a *great* idea, I just may have to steal it!

My fiance loves TtR and we're heading to Hawaii in April for our honeymoon. This would be a great way to bring some boardgaming fun along. I just hope we don't end up like my brother and his wife who haven't played Scrabble since their honeymoon 7 years ago after a couple of big arguments.

I do use the small decks of cards and it works out perfectly. I've uploaded the files and am justing waiting for it to be approved. Tonight, I'll play a round and take a picture so people can see what it looks like.

It just screams "Cube bag with same distro as cards!" doesn't it?

Maybe another bag with small numbered tiles and another set of laminated sheets for the tickets. Sure it would add a lot more cost, but go big or go home, right?

I'm thinking that the cubes are likely to be easily dropped and scattered, especially if you're playing in the car/plane/etc. Seems like the cards would be easier to control. Especially since each player would have to have their personal bag to hold their "hand" and then dump it all out to count if they had enough X color and Y color yet. Plus the cards are more compact than a couple bags of cubes/tiles.

I like the idea of cubes more...
Tickets cause more trouble...maybe also little cube with two names and point value?
Cubes are smaller and they don't need to be kept on flat surface as cards. Also You'd need a little cup for players to keep their "trains"

This is a great idea, and I suspect a lot of us will try to use it. But, the idea that the creator might get the publisher to buy it has one major problem: the creation of this "travel TTR" might be, in itself, a violation of the publisher's copyright, and I cannot think of a good reason for the owner of the original game to even think about buying something that already belongs to him/her/it. (I understand TTR was designed by Alan Moon; I don't know who currently holds the copyright.) This travel version is most likely a "derivative" work of TTR, as "derivative" is defined in the copyright statute. The creator of TTR has the exclusive right to produce derivative works:

"Subject to sections 107 through 122, the owner of copyright under this title has the exclusive rights to do and to authorize any of the following: (1) to reproduce the copyrighted work in copies...; (2) to prepare derivative works based upon the copyrighted work; (3) to distribute copies...of the copyrighted work to the public by sale or other transfer of ownership, or by rental, lease, or lending...." 17 U.S.C. 106.

I don't mean to make too much of this. I just think it is worthwhile for us to remember when we are talking about the many, many great ideas and game aids found on Boardgamegeek that the copyright still belongs to the original creator, who had the inspiration for the original idea. I'm guessing that, if a person adds another verse to "Let it Be" or a brass horn section, the copyright still belongs to John Lennon for all of it, even the derivative ideas.

Thanks for the file.

I know I was just joking around. I wouldn't get a penny from Alan Moon... and I believe Michael Jackson has the copyright to "Let It Be."

You're right! And, according to at least one knowledgeable source, "Let it Be" was written by Paul McCartney, not John Lennon. (Who would have guessed that the band leader of Wings could write such a classic?) I knew you were joking around, and I didn't mean to sound strident. I love all these great ideas, and use them liberally.

Thanks.

MJ owned the Beatles song catalog. Let it be must be part of that. In fact, he outbid Paul McCartney for it, when the company that owned it went belly up, IIRC.

DoW themselves list numerous fan versions on their TtR pages:
