Homemade race for Small World - HYDRAS

"If you loose a region, instead of discarding one Race token you get another from the Storage tray. At every end of your turn return a Race token to the Storage tray." (Edit: only while active)

So if attacked instead of loosing one token you get another one. You can get extra tokens this way. They multiply like that To compensate that, every turn one unit dies.

I'm not sure about the number, but 5 seems fine.

Printable version (with tokens) is available here:

VERY nicely done!

5 token is probably pretty good. This would be a race that would probably be left alone, as opponent waited for them to die off by themselves. Having well defended territories would make the cost for Hydras to invade so high, they could only take afew per turn, and not earn too much money.
This race would be quite strong in the early game, when there are still alot of empty regions.

Would the lose 1 token per turn also be in effect in decline? That would also impact their usefullness severely.

No. That disadvantige is not working while in decline. The back of the card should be empty.

I think this race is overpowered.

Let's compare it to elves: When attacked, they don't lose anything. It's an annoying race for sure. But at last by attacking the elves say in 2 regions, you can expect them to regain only one. when elves are very spread out, it becomes easy to kick them out of some regions.

Let's compare it to skeletons: usually, conquering 4 regions in a single turn is very rare. You need something like Armed skeletons to even hope of being able to do that, unless your adversairies as so stupid as to let you grow for *several* turns. When skeletons are very spread out, it becomes easy to start culling back their population,.

Hydras seem to combine the best of both races. They're way too powerful especially in the beginning of the game, where they can spread a LOT, but if you try to cut them out of some territories, they just come back EVEN STRONGER THAN BEFORE. When hydras are very spread out, it becomes extremely hard to prevent them from gaining even MORE territories.

With elves asnd skeletons, territories containing only 1 token are WEAK. When this occurs, its time to "go into decline" as the capacity of the race to continue expansion is negligible. Okay, with skeletons you could all pick them to redo a first conquest turn, but then you'd be sacrificing a *lot* of VPs to try gaining a few more tokens.

Compare:

Initial Situation: 12 skeletons in 10 territories.

Scenario A: Leave it like that = 10 VPs this turn.

Snneario B: You pick up all 12 skeletons and conquer 4 weak regions (using 3 skeletons each) = 4 VPs and 2 skeletons this turn.

Essentially, your 2 new skeletons have cost you 3 VPs each.

With hydras, however, the whole concept of the game is races become obsolete once they are spread out too thin, and that is completely thrown out of whack with hydras. You *do* want *all* of our territories to have only one hydra each, because there is no real advantage to having more.

Skeletons need make wise choice of where to defend to avoid losing too many tokens/VPs in a round. Even elves have this choice to some degree. These races still have "enemy borders" and "safe regions". Hydras however don't seem to face the same problem at all.

So I'd limit the ability in one of the following ways:

Choice A: The ability activates only when there were at least 2 Hydras in the conquered region. Solitary Hydras die normally when conquered. This forces the player back to having to choose between spreading out too thin to score VPs (and then inevitably going into decline) or expansion. Also, it implies making intelligent choices about which regions to protect or not, instead of simply having to dumbly try to put only 1 token everywhere. It also makes powers such as "with two heroes" great for Hydras, because they can leave single tokens in some regions without fear of losing them.

Choice B: Greatly reduce the population of that race, let's say to 3 tokens (like the dwarfs). This way, if nobody attacks them. they won't take up too much territory and the player will again be faced with choosing between going into decline to gain more territory or bunkering up. With full standard population, this would be a no-brainer: take 8 or 10 regions around your previous declined race, and stay dumbly there.

To resume:

Choice A (Population 5):
When Hydras are active, at the every end of your turn you must return a race token to the Storage tray. If a region you occupy by at least two Hydras race tokens is conquered, instead of discarding one Hydra race token, you return all your race tokens to your hand and also get another one from the Storage tray.

Choice B (Population 3):
When Hydras are active, at the every end of your turn you must return a race token to the Storage tray. If a region you occupy is conquered, instead of discarding one Hydra race token, you return all your race tokens to your hand and also get another one from the Storage tray.

I prefer the Choice A approach, as it is more interesting to player to have more tokens, AND it allows more interesting strategies and reflexion.

Awesome idea Istvan! I like the idea of your Hydras and I would say I like the rules too. But I suggest to lower the number to 3, since no one will attack you as long as you have this race active and you could protect your in-decline race if you play wisely. But imagine if you get Hydra after your Ghouls go in-decline

I dunno, I think the decision in the races released so far to keep things generally humanoid sort of makes it all work better thematically with the race/power combination... sure, "flying tritons" or "diplomatic ghouls" are a little silly, but mounted hydras just doesn't make physical sense.

You sure you want to attack me with the balrog? alright then.......

I'm not sure why people think it needs a lower number. I can't imagine giving a race 3 AND having it shrink if it's not attacked. That just seems bad. maybe 4 but certainly not 3. I think 5 is right.
