That's pretty cool. What do each of the colors represent?

It is the same color scheme as the third edition.
Yellow = Queen
Blue = Ant
Green = Grass hopper
Red = Spider
Purple = Beetle
Grey = Mosquito

It looks like I will have to craft a couple of orange pieces for the new dragon fly.

Very pretty and creative idea too. My only gripe on these nutjob, DIY Hive versions is trying to move and manuever such small pieces.

Gorgeous work though!

Thank you. I mainly did this so I would have a mini version to put in my travel pack. This whole set fits into a 1.5" x 2" box. It is great for playing in small spaces. The small nuts are easily dislodged if one isn't careful however.

They seem to have an insect image underneath the gem, or is that an illusion?

Details please! What size are they, and where did you get the jewels?

Looks great...I would like to try to make on for my travel set.

Just shadows in the facets, mostly from the lighting and the flash needed to get the colors to show up.

The nuts are 1/4", brass and steel. Easy to obtain at any hardware store. The jewels are glass crystal beads. I got those at a bead shop near the hardware store. They are held in place with a clear silicone caulking. I had to be careful not to use too much silicone on the underside of the beetle and mosquito pieces so they would stack properly. After I assembled them, I tested them out. I noticed that there wasn't enough contrast between the blue & green and gray & purple in low light. I clipped the head of a pin and siliconed it into the top of the green and gray pieces so I could tell them apart easier. As a bonus, the box the pins came in was just the right size to hold the set.

If you had used white silicone the colors would come out brighter and you could tell them apart much easier.

Great idea though, that's how I will quickbuild my first Hive set.

I wanted the top surface to be clear, just metal and crystal. Maybe I can paint the underside white for the same effect.

Is brass magnetic? If so then you could put a magnetic sheet down inside the box that holds them for a "no slip" surface!

This is a cool idea. I may have to make my own!

Thank you for clarifying! I, too, thought there were petrified (or plastic) bugs in there, and was going crazy looking for instructions to get it done!
