I just finished the model - I plan to put 4 locations directly on the ship, as is on the board, and the other 6 (3 per side) on elevated dowels between the landing bays and the hull.

I will certainly post this photo when its done.
You'll have trouble getting the player characters to stand on a 3d model. It may be overkill (however, it looks like you might be into overkill ) but you could get a plexiglass overlay to hover above the model using clear plastic dowels as legs.
That is exactly what I am going to do - clear plastic dowels hovering perpendicular to the board, just above the ship. The FTL, Armory, and maybe Sickbay/The Brig will sit on the ship.
Now that I made this model, I might make it again knowing all the pitfalls I had to work through. These card stock models are fiddely, to say the least. I also have darkened it unintentionally by hitting it with some satin crystal clear, something I've done on boards and such before. It actually effected the grays much more than I anticipated.
If anyone is interested, I can find the exact link to the specific model or one can just browse the site after joining. Its a really nice little hobby place and the work these guys have done is nothing short of amazing. The site is www.zealot.com There is actually a 3 foot card stock model of this same design. Now THAT would be overkill on our little board here.
I should have the basestars ready today for another couple of photos.
From there it is the 1.5 foot model. For durability, is best to print this out on 110 card stock available at any Walmart store, and I'm sure many others.
Thank you for the tip - I need more of those to get to 30 at some point being rather new to the site.
Anyway, its 110 pound card stock here in the states, the recommended thickness for most models this size. Its durable yet flexable. It might look pretty good, but there are many sloppy areas that I had to go back and regraph plain paper print outs so open seams would not be seen. Hitting it with a coat of dull coat, sort of darkened it a bit as well, something I would do far less of next time. I also did some hotglue between seams, thinking that would look better, but I think in hindsight it doesn't.
You learn from making these, according to all the experienced modelers. The next one I make, will avoid some of the pitfalls I learned while making this one.
There is a basestar model that isn't exactly the best, but its certainly passable as a game piece as well, and infinitely better than the 2 in the game. The only thing is that it needs to be right off board or the board gets rather crowded.
D'oh! I bought overtext even though I have nothing interesting to say.

That's sweet!! glad you finally got this approved!
By who? The wife or the mods?
Indeed, why was it so hard to get this one approved?
I voted to decline this image in Geekmod when it came through because it was filed under "Game - Images containing no altered components where the focus is on the game, the box, or components." I have no problem with the picture, I think it's some great creative work, but it is definitely NOT a shot of original game components. It got resubmitted in the correct category, and Voila!, it got through.
Thanks to all for the thumbs up and the tips. I will post the final "game version" with elevated location stands in the near future. Special thanks to yohanleafheart whose 30 gold tip enabled me to buy this nice little avatar.
As for the Colonial one model, I am looking into that as a matter of fact - I have a hard time stopping. Please see some of my other images including an "exciting scene" from Season 2 Episode 2 - Valley of Darkness!
I registered with this site and went through a ridiculous 'ten posts required before access to downloads allowed' rigmarole, and i still cannot download this file. it insists I need to wait 48 seconds no matter how long i wait. Fail.
Most language free systems aren't this clear, or easy to learn! Awesome!
I'm back, and ER is STILL #1 in my book!

I registered as well, and agree that it's an annoying site. What's up with the unreadable are-you-human thing? And they didn't like my answer to their "What's 2+4/answer with a word" (I answered, "four plus two"). Apparently it's a site for zealots who jump through hoops and the zealots who make them jump through hoops. (*~*)
