Tis now the very witching time of night, when churchyards yawn and hell itself breathes out contagion to the world.

I should just point out that I hadn't punched out all the counters yet, so there aren't any piles of monster tokens in the picture, and there are only a few influence and favour tokens in their storage areas.

Absolutely. It's not a cheap game, but I feel like I've already got most of my money's worth just from the time I've spent happily ogling the board and other components.

Even if the game turns out to be poor (which I doubt), I'll gladly frame the board and stick it up on my wall

Unfortunately you can't really play it solo according to the standard rules - it relies too much on hidden information (Sauron plays monsters or blank 'rumours of monsters' face-down, and combat is done through simultaneous card selection).

But I suspect that it might be possible to come up with a decent solo variant - I'll have to give that some thought.

When I wrote in the caption that this was a solo run-through, it was really just a run-through of a few turns to familiarise myself with the rules, playing both Sauron and 2 heroes. I was playing the monsters face down (without looking at them first, so as Sauron I couldn't really use them tactically) and drew te monsters'/minions' combat cards at random (which also weakens them, again helping the heroes). But it worked well enough to get the hang of the game, and to convince myself that it looks and feels fantastic, and that I must get a proper game in soon.

You can play this game solo and its great fun you just have to either 'actively forget' where the mosters are or just dont look at the cards when they are put down. In combat its true you will tend to react against the card you know the enemy is putting down but I always do the monster/minion first as I find they have the advantage in my games anyway (Sauron usually wins) so that evens things out and usually its pretty obvious which card you would play so soemtimes you just have to play as if you dont know the other persons intentions. It takes a bit of getting used to but its still good fun. And in all of my solo games to date Ive never known how it was going to pan out or who was going to win. Half way through my initial expectations were usually proved wrong - so its very playable. The main thing is there are plenty of cards that dictate play and its always interesting turning over the next event card etc as you never know what is going to happen and what turn the game is going to take next.
