I keep debating if I should add back on the 8th ring. I had 8 full rings with the TI1 and TI2 versions. However, the TI3 hexes are bigger and the game already pushes the limits when if comes to table space with 7 rings.
Yes, I did say hours. The trick is to have an impartial judge (in this case me) to keep things moving. After someone activated a system, the next player could start their move as long as they were far enough away to not interfere. It was common for 4-5 players figuring out their builds at the same time.
In a regular TI3 game, the number 1 source of slow down is not paying attention to whose turn it is. On average, each person will get 4 turns per round. During a 10 round game, 6 player game that is 240 turns. If each player takes 30 seconds to realize that it is their turn, that is 120 minutes of downtime that could have been avoided.
So, for the 12-player version where each player typically gets 6 turns per round thanks to the logistics strategy card, that can turn into 6 hours saved. By adding in the ability to overlap turns, it is more like 10 hours saved.

Remembering to say "I'm done its your turn" works too but sadly not everyone does that..
Do you think turn overlap is possible on a regular game or not due to the proximity of each player with only 6?

The turn order mechanic is part of the problem. As the turn order changes from turn to turn, many people forget when they go and don't pay attention to who is in front and after them for the current round.
A player might state that his turn is over, but the next person is line might not realize that it is there turn.

In the early parts of the game, definitely. As soon as someone activates a hex, the next person can start their turn as long as their actions are not dependent on the previous players.
I love the huge map, but at the same time, something that size, I prefer the split galaxy idea that comes in the alternate maps online. Congrats on the 5.5 hour game. I have a lot of people around here who won't play anymore because their number one complaint is "it takes too long to play." The last game we played was four hours long and that is faster than our local board game guru teaching and playing a new game to three players.
We stress that each player learns who is after him numerically (therefore, strategically) each round. If a player goes into building, we immediately move to the next player. This helps a lot and rarely will a player insist that he needs to wait on the previous player's builds. We also have a general rule. "If you're not sure who's turn it is, ask Josh (insert typically time consuming player here)."
I can't wait to get my next game of TI in. This pic just makes it that much more exciting!
I demand that Gen-con picks up and moves to Seattle or Spokane... I wanna play a huge TI game like that... Heck, I'd settle for a normal game, with people to play it with! But alas I cannot want my cake and eat it too.

Second that. I would love to get a TI3 game in. My usualy group tends to not favor games that go for more than 2 hours unless several members are missing. And that always prevents us from playing with a full roster.
