As much as I love the look of custom boards, it doesn't seem practical for Space Hulk, mainly cause none of those boards could really be used with any of the missions. You'd have to create your own custom missions.

Though the conveyer belt looks cool. I wonder if you could use that for a custom Robo Rally board?

But making your own missions is part of the fun.

I'd say it's actually one of the main "points" of the game!

I've rarely (if ever) played a custom mission. They're too tricky to get right, never had enough play testing, etc. I only like to play "official" missions.

If I had easy access to a fantastically made piece of art like that then coming up with custom scenarios would be a very minor issue I think.

Balance might be a bit of a problem but to be honest Space hulk scenarios are rarely balanced anyway IMO.

Regardless, that is a fantastic and inspirational area to play games on. Storing something like that however would be my undoing.

Heh, that's always my undoing with 3D terrain. I just finished building Ted Sandyman's Mill for our Lord of the Rings miniature games, and I have no clue where to put it. It's a 2ft x 2ft board. I was going to build a bridge over to the Green Dragon Inn, but again, where would I put it?!?

Building a bunch of corridors for Space Hulk would be cool, but how do you store it and carry it to gaming sessions?

Hi guys,
Thanks for all the feedback!
It took a LONG time to build and paint (1.5 years).

Being a HUGE Space Hulk fan, I originaly started to build the board for Space Hulk (I always loved building massive boards and using all the nid models). I then thought I could also use it for Legions of Steel, however while building the board, I started working on a new game design; "Xeno-Terror". It's a sci-fi dungeoncrawl, or "station crawl" as I like to call it. So now I get to use the board for 3 games! YAY!!! Now, I just need to find people to play with...

I built the board to be modular (6"x6") sections, which are also stackable. If I was going to do it again, I would have gone with 8x8. Everything you see (and more) fits in 3 drawers in a standard clothes dresser (or 2 boxes). All the small pieces are not attached, so you can move them around for different missions (transported in Sabol Foam trays).

Got a good chuckle out of this -- the implicit logic here is that GW's "official" scenarios have actually been playtested to the point where there's both a confirmed level of balance and excitement. GW and playtesting... yeah, right. laugh

Hey; I agree with the boardgame porn comment!

I am curious to learn more about your sci-fi dungeoncrawl "Xeno-Terror". Sounds really cool. Could you maybe open a thread on that and explain? Are there other games that fit that genre as well?

When I look at your board, besides SH and aliens, it makes me think of Alien Syndrome, and Xenophobe, two of the great arcade classics

Xeno-Terror is in the final stages of a year of playtesting. There is a BGG entry for it which has an updated description. While the simplicity of Space Hulk is great, if you are looking for something "meatier" Xeno-Terror may be what you are looking for...plus you can use your Space Hulk mini's with it.

This reminds me stongly of some of the single player missions in the original starcraft computer game. They were some of my fav missions because they were so diff to the rest of the RTS game.

Wow! This melts my mind!

What if there was installed small lights in the corridors and rooms with a switchboard to turn them on and off? Then playing in the dark would really come to life. Crazy, I know... devil

Awesome - if only I had the talent and forever to do it in, I would!cry

Makes me want to break out my old Space Hulk, but then the disappointment of the card tiles would hit. Let’s see it in glorious gaming action now, preferably with a blow by blow account of your rule set.

Well done again!

I've seen some good 3d boards for Space Hulk and while they were all very impressive this is possibly the best. The only issue is that it's best feature is also it's weakest: it doesn't really look all that much like Space Hulk. That said, who really cares when it looks this good and can be used for a multitude of other games and for miniature skirmish games.
