It has been proven that the statues were transported upright, balancing them a bit to one side while pulling the other one, just as you would move a large box through a carpet floor, balancing it to create a rotation point while pulling or pushing the opposite side (depending on where are you standing relative to the floor). When done trough the bare soil it would leave very distinctive marks find all trough the Island.
This is interesting because it is thought that it was used to create a rather impressive effect when watched from afar - Walking Giants - as they have been found also named in the island glyphs. If this was done for superstition or to deter incoming enemies (imagine a fleet sailing towards the Island watching this rock giants wandering all around).
When the statues fell, it was rather difficult to put in upright position again and that is why is believed so many of them lie around the Island in horizontal position, usually broken apart by the fall.
