Hello again,

Well after a well deserved shore leave (not really, just had to put this metephor in here somewhere ;-)), I'm back on this project.

First thing on the list: close the top hull. After that, I'll be looking at how to integrate the hatches. Then the second hull. Not sure how all of this will turn out but that's a big part of the fun.

Hope to have more soon.
Regards,

Maxime

Being a parent of two pre-teens, I'm a bit uncomfortable with the whole concept of the grog bottles. They are obviously alcool beverages and an important part of the game. They work as power ups and enables the players to do certain things that they couldn't do without....and that is a strange message to send to kids.

BUT this is a game and I fully endorse the theme of drunken gnomes in a sub and I sure wanna stay cool for my kids as long as possible cool so I've avoided the temptation of turning the grog into energy drinks for
the sake of being politically correct

That being said, once I figure out the hatches issue, racking up the grog bottles could be interesting

You could change those grogs into magical potions; that would still be somewhat fitting with the fantasy theme of gnomes. And those potions come with a negative side effect. I think that might be a better story to replace alcoholic grogs than energy drinks (which do not have these kind of benefits and side effects in real life too).

Don't drink and dive!

Incredible!!! I'm very glad you've come back to this project!!

As someone who was inspired by you to attempt my own foam board projects, I'm very curious to know what material the clear green screen at the front is made of.

I dunno, not to get on the path of whether hiding kids from vices actually works and if acknowledging is the same as condoning, I think the grog fits fine.

I mean, look at the possible anti-drinking examples:

1. You drink some grog, you could fall asleep and die - even after one drink. You never know.

2.Drinking gives you false courage - but is it ever safe to run into a burning building? Of course not, you could die!

3. The negative effects of the grog doesn't wear off automatically and is hard to get rid of. Start drinking and who knows when you can get off the ride if you do not like it?!?!

OK, the drinking coffee to sober up is totally un-realistic. Have to have a talk about that one, but even then it is a good chance to teach them that everything they heard about drinking is not true.

Oh, BTW - nice sub!

I agree with this, if the game just had you drink the Grog and get abunch of good stuff but had no negative effects it would be a wrong message to send to kids. However, I think in the game they have illustrated both sides nicely, there are consequences for every action in life and this game demonstrates that excellently.

Your mindfulness of this as a parent is commendable.

Depending on the age of your pre-teens, two safe alternatives:

Thermoses of hot coffee--warming in the cold ocean, and a staple of sailors on watch for over a century.

Thermoses of hot cocoa--warming in the cold ocean, and familiar to millions of children as a booster of morale and flagging energy, especially when engaged in arduous cold-environment activities (sledding, snowball fights, building igloos).

Either way, silver or black cylindrical objects should do nicely.

Edit: The negagive effects of alternative beverages can be correlated to the debilitating influence of "grog" with a reminder of the impact of warm drinks on cold bladders when one is too busy or too inconvenienced to relieve same (long drives, layers of cold-weather clothing, etc.). Most children will readily identify with the serious mental distraction and degradation of performance that accompanies "the need to go."

On the original subject, great sub! What did you use for the clear part?

It all looks wonderful and . . . you're tempting me . . . . .

For those who aren't aware of its existence, Revell plastic model kit company made a nice model of Capt. Nemo's "Nautilus" with a clear side panel and partial interior.

While it won't serve "as is" for the gnome sub, the hull size would allow conversion with enough interior compartments to model the game sub. You'd need to do some cutting with a modeler's razor saw and add some sheet plastic or heavy card bulkheads, but the sub's shape is conducive to the project. I'm not sure if the kit is still in production or not, but it can probably still be found in some online model sellers' lists.

It looks very much like the top part of a 1.25 litre drink bottle, i.e. sprite.

You know, unless you store your kids in a bubble and pipe their school lessons in via radio, they're going to hear about drinking. If you mystify it and make it some kind of huge deal, it's just going to be worse when they actually go somewhere that alcohol is served.

I drink beer on a regular basis. My kids have both tried it. They both hate it. I can't even get them to try wine, and hard liquor is right out. They're teenagers, so they ought to be all 'OMG booze is so cool', but there's no mystique, no allure of the disallowed. They don't drink because they just plain don't want it.

I understand wanting to protect your kids, but sooner or later they have to go outside, and when they're miles away from your protective cocoon, you won't be there to tell them that the beer is an energy drink and the tequila is hot cocoa. If you make a big deal about alcohol, it will become a big deal.

I'm living proof - my parents were preachers. I didn't even have a beer until I was 22. By 24, I was well on my way to becoming an alcoholic (and I still can't quit smoking). I don't blame my parents for that - I made the choices, and happily my wife put up with drunken parties and puke in the living room for three days before she offered to skin me like a mule if I did it again. But if my parents hadn't spent so much time trying to make sure I never saw booze, smokes or loose women, I know that I wouldn't have been so drawn to them (well, I still probably would have been drawn to the loose women).

Don't make a big deal out of alcohol, and it won't be a big deal.

So close, but no cigar shake
In fact, it's a quarter of the top part of a 2 litre drink bottle. And it's Ginger Ale, not Sprite

Thanks again for all the suggestions (alternatives to grog). Also quite interesting to read all your comments concerning the alcohol theme itself in and outside the game. Rest assured I won't keep my kids in the dark about alcohol (censorship). Just wanted to feel at ease when tackling the issue when we play the game: Pre-teen is not quite teen yet. You have to realize that no so long ago, I was playing with them with their little plastic action figures... Now that they've grown, we play with little plastic action figures ON A BOARD! No more kidding around

Energy drinks are actually very unhealthy, and can lead to heart problems, as well as risky and thoughtless/uncontrolled behavior.

http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/news/20080924/energy-drink...

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/19/health/healthspecial/19dri...

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24831859

Having worked with tweens and teens for the past four years, I can say that energy drinks cause more academic and behavioral problems for students than alcohol does, because they are more readily available, and parents allow their use.
Like other drugs, including alcohol, caffeine is best used in moderation.

Grog is a naval institution, and not something a teen will be likely to find on the shelf. There are two types of grog, traditional and "formal" - traditional grog is rum and water with lime, while a formal grog (as featured at military dining ins) is a deliberately disgusting beverage that may or may not contain alcohol (a mix of juices, milk, coffee, and cereal seems common), that people are forced to drink from for breaches of etiquette. If your kids become fascinated, you could make them some formal "grog", and allow them to sample it.

You're probably hitting a much better middle ground than either me or my parents. Good for you, man.

And the submarine is totally bad-ass.
