Modified Board for Aliens Reactor Scenario. Layout is exactly the same, but you'll notice changes I made to accommodate new features, including a race to rescue cocooned colonists as "blips" appear on the motion tracker, counting down to the surprise atta

Oops - guess my caption was too long. Anyway, I was just saying that the "blips" (white wooden blocks) are added to the motion tracker until a certain number is accrued, at which time the alien attacks will start, as in the regular game. Also note the red barrels. These squares serve as obstructions, as in the regular game, but can also be shot at, a hit resulting in the barrels exploding and wiping out aliens in adjacent squares. Watch out, though, each barrel square that explodes will send the turn counter down one extra square, simulating the speed-up of the reactor meltdown. Intense!

I played this game when I was 10 or so, during a time I was obsessed with the movie "Aliens" (still haven't grown out of that). At that time, I bought the board game thinking this would just be another movie tie-in rip-off where you roll a die and move to a square that says "An alien attacked you! Lose your turn!". You know, an aliens version of "Life."

How delighted and fascinated I was to find such an amazing and intense game. Akin to playing a video game, only with cool little components and real images from the movie. Hours and hours spent playing with the movie soundtrack on in the background.

Anyway, now I am introducing my 6-year-old to the game, and so I decided that rather than buy the game on e-bay (expensive!), I would create my own components (and add some new features while I'm at it!).

Big aliens fan myself, and while owning this title I've yet to play it. Using this map might just be the reason to do so. I think this would look pretty good with the Friekorp 15 minatures:

I'm curious if you have plans to do the other portions of the map, coridor and operations? Looking at my copy it includes the expansion map. I'll bounce you a message on this subject.

Would like to see a summary of your varient rules. They sound interesting.

I had only planned on creating the reactor room map, actually. To be honest, it was the only level that I felt was really well done. It almost seems like the game was built around this level, and then other levels were tacked on for more perceived value. When I owned the game, sometimes I would get ambitious and play through all missions, but mostly I just wanted to play the reactor room over and over again.

I am putting together a zip file that will have this map split into paper-sized tiles for printing, along with my variant optional rules (which are very simple - should just be a few paragraphs text file).

Well, I would definitely put the Op's mission in the second best position. But it always seemed like just a bunch of book-keeping when I was younger. Keeping track of turns as the aliens bang on the door and I just move pawns down a hallway, and having to do certain things with Burke at certain times, and keeping track of how many turns I've been cutting the door, etc. It's a little bit better in the Flash version, just because all that is taken care of for you.

Still, there is another reason why I don't like that level as much: I always get killed!

Wow, I love this map! I can't wait to print it.

Do you have the complete image in even higher res than what's posted above, so that it could be printed out at a Kinko's or the like as one sheet and look professional?

Yes, I created the the map at 300 dpi (professional print quality). Comes to about 28 inches wide by 18 inches tall, I believe. Anyway, I have it as one big piece or tiles to print on 8.5 X 11 inch sheets. Plus a pdf with variant rules for using the new features included on the map. Anybody can shoot me a message and I'll send you the link.

I printed out tiles myself because I was impatient, but the game is such a hit with my son that I now want to go back and get it printed out and mounted as one big piece at Kinkos or something.

Joshua's new map and variant rules are now available as a free add-on for my Battlegrounds virtual tabletop software (which allows you to play the game either online or offline). Click here for details and screenshots.

Thanks, Joshua, for giving me permission to redistribute your map and variant rules.

Great job Joshua, doing something similar at the moment, using Space Hulk 1st Ed tiles, probably not as authentic looking as yours but is part of a bigger project for a SH Aliens conversion. Ill post it up when Im done. Any chance of getting hold of your rules and the tiles to print in sections? cheers dude

Joshua,

I do not suppose that you gave the same treatment to the map from the expansion set? This one looks fantastic!
