Thanks for the kind comments guys... it was becoming a bit of a chore, coming home from work and painting and basing and varnishing... but worth it in the end for the effect they have when on the board.
Carthaginians: used Macedonian Command figures from WargamesFoundry
Romans: Roman Tribunes from WargamesFoundry and Late Etruscan foot command from Aventine Miniatures (great site and they do fantastic elephants... if only they'd fit on the board!)
Paints used were again from WargamesFoundry. Each colour comes as a pack of 3 shades which cuts down on the thinking and mixing time. They also sell a great book on figure painting which describes in detail this 3 stage paint system. Well worth it... my figure painting improved 100% after I picked it up.
Don't think they have any offers on at the minute, but they do seem to pop up quite frequently so it's always good to keep one's eyes peeled and get ready to put in that big order.
