What do you give the Power Grid fan who has everything? I made this Power Plant stand for a friend's birthday. After a successful first outing, I came up with some ideas for a cash till and a base for stabilization. I've submitted the PDF of the stand art

Whats it made out of? Foam core board?

Looking at that I'm thinking if I made one I might make the base thinner and with slots in it so that the top can sit down on top of it, then the whole thing might fit into the game box.

And perhaps make an angeled slot in base as well so it can be slotted into that to stand (I can't see the back but I'm guessing this has a stand in back to stay upright?)

BTW, don't take this as critisism, I love your idea

In some circumstances, that actually is an ok plant to get first round. For instance, that one new expansion map that starts with a bunch of garbage in the market.

Yabbut in the background you'll see the map is on the France side, not the Italy side.

By all means, adapt it however you like.

I will upload a photo of the backside later (I'm at work right now). The original design I made for my friend was just the market stand all by itself (no base). Because it's made of foamcore, it was too light and required someone to hold the back supports to keep it steady.

With this new design, I added the base to accommodate a larger paperback book that can be slipped into the base. This adds enough weight to stabilize it. While I was at it, I went ahead and created the money till.

And for the record...this does not fit in the box. In theory it could. If you just mount the market stand artwork and add a hinged back support (like a picture frame) it would totally fit in the box...as long as your cat is not in the box already.

This is a photo of the back side of the market stand. I made the base to accommodate a paperback to provide stability and weight. The plant deck fits conveniently between the supports.

Thanks again, Michael!

As the lucky recipient of the original prototype, I must say that I am thrilled with my gift - and am tempted to copy some of these improvements. But what if that ruins the value of my first edition?!

I would be happy to retrofit your prototype with the 2.0 features. But then again, as good a carpenter as you are...I imagine you can manage quite well with foamcore.

This is awesome! All it needs is some 1" holes located in the board where the plants sit sticking out at the top of each plant so you can easily grab the plants by sticking your finger through. Like this (red is where the hole should be in relation to the plant):

Okay. For all you impatient kiddies out there (myself included)...I've posted the PDF on my website for download until the Admins in the GeekDojo decide to stop eating Christmas Cookies and finally approve my file.

Thanks to everyone for the great comments and tons-o-thumbs. I really didn't expect this kind of reaction. I knew there were rabid Power Grid fans...but WOW! laugh

Anyway, have fun putting your market stand together. Please post photos of your creations...I'd love to see how the Poker Chip fans adapt this design.wow

Happy New Year, Geeks!!!

Without further adieu...GO FOR IT:

I want to know something. I try to print the PDF to take a test and for the good size its bigger than legal sheet (8 1/2 x 14). Do you print that in two section ? Its longer than 11 aprox 12 So you dont print that on sticker sheet ? Only on paper and glue after on foam board ? Thx

The image size is 10 x 12. In order to print it in one piece, you will need to print on Tabloid size paper (11 x 17). I know for most folks that means one of two things: Kinko's or the office color printer (shhhh!). I have an advantage in that I own a printer (EPSON) that prints up to Super A3 (13 x 19) on inkjet paper. A local color-copy place (like Kinko's) can probably give you a nice result for a $1 a copy (U.S.).

Once I printed the image out, I spray mounted the whole sheet onto a piece of foamcore—smoothing it out so there were no bubbles. I then used a very sharp X-acto blade to cut around the image with a ruler. The curve at the top was a freehand cut (no ruler).

The rest was just cutting foamcore and gluing with white glue.

Good Luck.

I'm in the process of building one now - GG being sent to the file section and I'll post a picture here when it is completed. I'm making the back out of hardboard and the shelves out of some scrap wood - just need to figure out a stand of some sort...

Editing since I'm the last post at the moment - mine is done - I trimmed a little off the bottom and it fits inside the box with nothing other than ditching the insert.

This is awesome! All it needs is some 1" holes located in the board where the plants sit sticking out at the top of each plant so you can easily grab the plants by sticking your finger through.

I was thinking something similar, but reaching around every time would be a chore. I'd suggest something on the back behind the cards to space them 1/8" or so away from the backing board; but running the entire horizontal length of the display so sliding cards to new positions isn't hindered.

Played with it tonight and made one tweak. The plants were a little tough to grab flat against the backing. I pulled out some self-adhesive foam sheets and was going to put a pad of each behind each card, but I was a little annoyed it would ruin the aesthetic. Then I realized I could cut some tiny dots of the foam out with a hole punch and put them over the dots in the card back images. It just gives them the little gap around the edge to grab them easier, or you can just push in on a side and the other side pops up a bit.

A picture is worth a thousand words:

First, thanks to Major Sholto for this amazing project idea. I've never made a foamcore item before, but I just had to have one of these PG card holders. Here is how mine turned out:

I didn't want to spend $10-15 on a can of spray glue, so I used a glue stick instead. It worked just fine.

I couldn't find any hinges for the stand, so I decided to make one that would disassemble. The next picture shows how it snaps together.

The stand is really sturdy, and the four pieces come apart to store flat. I made sure there was enough room under the lower cross brace to put the power plant deck, even when combining both decks.

If anyone is interested, I can make a template of the stand and upload it.

June 8, 2010: UPDATE: I finally got off my lazy butt and created a template for my stand. Check the files section - it should be available soon.

Matthew:

This is FANTASTIC! Keep those pictures coming folks. It's always fun to see what solutions people come up with after you've gotten the ball rolling (i.e. foam dots and disassembling stands). Very cool.

Funny, I saw this and thought "Wow, that looks just like the one I saw at ROBA a couple of months ago at ROBA!" I look at the username, look at your location and it turns out it IS the one I saw a couple of months ago.

What about putting a slot into the base, instead of a stand for the back? Would that be sturdy enough to use?

I think it would have to be designed so the top could have a slight tilt back like the original design.
