It's a nice replacement if you don't have Growing Hunger expansion.
...and if you use exactly 12 shards, it's useful to keep track of damage, too.

I've bought them in a craft store. they're sold on ebay, too, or by some online shops like Troll and Toad; but if you can find them on a shop you'll easily get more for less...
