game in progress: round three; one ballista killing the defenders on the upper right side, while the defender tries to prevent the trolls from getting into the stronghold
You made your wife play the attacker??! I hope this wasn't her first game.
Well, it was the first game of Stronghold for both of us. And since she is equally skilled when playing with hordes of green flesh, why not? (Well, she insisted on playing the green wave.)
Yes, it's Doom. This is the view uppon our "sci-fi-shelves" There are eight of them, sorted by "ages" and "themes" (fantasy, railroads, crusades, world war 2 etc.)
*wife enters room* Husband: Oh, honey, wait a sec... *pushes fat greasy guy from the attacker's seat* Husband: Please sit down a moment... *searching camera* *fat guy lying on floor, complaining* Wife: But I don't have to touch anything, right? Husband: Sure sure, just hold still. *click*

Hi, I'm no girl, and I don't own a copy of Stronghold - alas not yet
Let us know when you do get your operation though, so we know there's another girl out there playing ... wait, what? You were referring to the copy of Stronghold only, oh I see. My mistake.
I bought Stronghold because my wife enjoyed learning it (when we made our unofficial foray into the hotel at BGG.con). I did not think she would go for spending $80 on a boardgame, but we have played it with different family members since, and gotten lots of satisfaction from the purchase. Need more practice to get the play time down, and/or need a forcefield to keep the cats off the table for the games duration.
Interestingly, the invaders have lost all but the last game, where their (my brother and sister) strategy managed to starve the defender (me) for time and breech the walls in two places with every troll they could muster in the third round, I was surprised, but they were playing a strategy I had mentioned I wanted to try, so it was a cool result.
@ Jason Potapoff : And Stronghold isn't a "head game"...?
Well, after our first game we now tend to the conclusion, that the attacker is much harder to win with, too. But that doesn't mind her. She LOVES playing with green hordes and says "defending is boring, attacking and breaching your walls is much more fun". I won't contradict her
Don't get me wrong. I love cubes in - such as in trading games - they don't take away a thing. In a fantasy game with orcs, trolls, etc, it doesn't exactly suck me in. Function is one thing, but thematic, plasticy goodness is another
