Ah, I see what the two screens for each player are for now: one hides the workers while one makes their "simultaneous action selection" and then these are pulled up to reveal what everyone has chosen, while still hiding the paint blocks and coins. And the titular fresco looks to be of scenes from Genesis. But other than that, there's little I understand from looking; in particular how one is to get victory points from the money.

There are many great tutorial videos that explain the game in detail but to answer your question, the coins are used to buy paints. You get victory points by completing parts of the fresco and altar.
