Did you know: resting chopsticks across the bowl as seen in the picture is considered improper in Japan, as it has to do with funerals.

Called: Watashibashi.

That funerary custom is interesting to me. I find the use of chopsticks interesting... an attempt to eliminate instruments that are linked to hostility or violence. I did a search once on chopstick etiquette and learned it is rude to rub them against each other and that its correct etiquette to lift the bowl to your mouth and shovel the food in. The list of customs was not very extensive. I like the level of manipulation chopsticks allow. Is there a chopstick etiquette database somewhere?
