Painted the boots with a dark green. Then painted the bag with a suitable red. Then covered the whole miniature with a mix of matt varnish and black. You have to experiment to get just the right amount of black in with the varnish so that the black soaks into the cracks without it making the whole figure a bit dark.
However, I decided it was a bit too dark, and the matt varnish also took away some of the shinyness of the base figure. So I then drybrushed the 'brass' parts with a brass paint. This restored the shinyness and looked nice.
Then paint the belt black, the eyes yellow with a strip of black, followed by white teeth.
Then, another more precise mix of the varnish/black around the eyes and over the teeth. This gave the them more of a surround and looked better as well as protecting them. I think my picture above was actually done before this final stage.
Time taken: roughly 20 mins per figure, but I was painting them in batches. Caught up on a lot of TV watching whilst painting (I use the term 'watching' loosely)

Over 1 year on... I just finished painting the remaining 15. The g/f said she wouldn't play until I painted them all. now she will need to find another excuse!
