A gigantic silhoutte in the ruddy mist, the alien queen glowered above her egg cache like a great, gleaming insectoid Buddha.

When I first saw the Aliens, on VHS - being only 14 - she made a huge impression, engraving herself on my mind forever. I mean she looked amazing, backlit. Oh, and all that heavy breathing.

Now, other than irregularly digging out the Special Ed DVD, I continue to muck about with the best game version of the movie.

My Dad actually took me to see the movie when it was released in theaters in 1986. I was 9 years old and I can tell you that it made a huge impression on me. I remember cowering behind the seats from the first nightmare scene, peering out through the crack between the two seats in front of me. I considered asking my Dad to take me out of there, but didn't want to appear wimpy, especially since I had forced him to take me out of Tarzan Lord of Greystoke a couple of years earlier.

In the end, I got really excited by Aliens, often naming it as my favorite movie, although it would be several years before any of my friends would see it. I remember strongly identifying with Newt, but I just loved the sounds of the pulse rifles, the overall look of things and the pounding music during the first encounter.

I still have a strong emotional reaction to the movie at 32 years old, especially that pounding music, which was exceptional for an action movie. It really is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, action thriller of all time, although I get really bored by the extended edition that you find as Director's Cuts or whatever on the DVD's. The movie is perfectly paced as it was originally presented in the theater.

Thanks for sharing your Aliens setup with such nice images Mark. Any chance that we could see an overall shot, or is it set up more for individual diorama's than for play?

Wow, i was actually 6 years older than you, and still i had several weeks of nightmares after this one... makes me think your father really had a score to settle with that Tarzan stuff... whistle

Agree, the best action movie i know!

I watched the movie when I was about 14 or 15 on VHS, and I was so impressed that as soon as the movie was over, I rewinded the tape and started watching it again. This is the only movie in my life I've done that with.

Funny thing was that I picked it up at Blockbuster after recognizing the Aliens logo from a video arcade game I saw earlier. =)

Very nice photo. I like the blue sheen on your alien's shell (carapace?). Is the background photoshopped? Or did you find a nice cave to take the picture in

Yeah, I remember that arcade machine. I was able to get to the final boss (without continuing), but I never defeated it. I got it on MAME, but it's not the same

You could always make a control panel with joysticks/buttons and either hook it up to your computer, or make a full arcade mame cabinet.

Thats very cool. I haven't built one... yet. Although I plan to

Nowadays they aren't terribly hard to make since you buy the vastly superior USB controllers (instead of hacking a keyboard), and with LCD monitors they can be slim with less internal support inside, so its easier to make the cabinet too.

I'm too lazy for that

I play with a cordless gamepad, leaned on my couch, running MAME on my media center. Quite comfortable, but not quite the same experience that with an arcade cabinet.

Well if you only want the control panel itself, I've seen places that sell nice big ones with trackballs and 2 player setups for around $500 (smaller ones can be much less).

Pretty sure he's talking about the first picture...the one of the model/miniature, not the movie photo.

I'm curious myself. I have the Horrorclix queen (which I use for this exact same purpose), and I'm pretty sure that ain't it.

No, it's not the Horrorlix model.

She's a Yoshimura model kit, if I remember correctly.
