After playing Tongiaki on Haula Beach, I decided to only play games in their proper real-world settings. I abandoned this approach forever after playing Arkham Horror.

After your wise decision to avoid visiting hoary Arkham, it inspired me to share these, the Primary Rules for Surviving the Lovecraftian Universe;

1) Never read any books.
2) Never go anywhere far from the center of civilization.
3) Never go in the water.
4) Never go to the arctic, small towns, the country, or the woods.
5) Never go into a graveyard, tomb, catacomb, or basement.
6) Never dream.
7) Never associate with foreigners or visit their countries.
8) Never go into an abandoned anything.
9) Never dig anything up.

and ...

10) Never run. You'll only die tired.

And those shotgun shells and cans of food might serve you well in your average zombie apocalypse, but we're talking cyclopean horrors from beyond time and space here.

Hmm, you've missed the point of a shotgun in the Lovecraftian universe. It's not for shooting the horrors out there - it's for shooting your companions in the leg to hobble them and help you escape for a short while; and for later shooting yourself when you go insane as the thing catches up to you in the wee hours of the night a few weeks later.

Lovely picture, were you still finding sand in the box for weeks afterwards?

Thanks! Luckily, the pieces are pretty straightforward: flat and uncreased. The sand pretty much slid right off of them. I suppose it's not really much different than playing Hive in the sand.

I'm just glad I got this picture when I had the chance. Just a few minutes later, a few more players showed up and, tragically, filled up the beach. Of course, this meant they all disappeared, and none of them have been seen since.

Why? Bad time in Salem, MA? Spend too much money at the tacky souvenir shops? Get stuck in traffic on 128 or 95?

Or for leaving one shell for yourself...

But where are the other 3 players? You are clearly playing with 6 colors. I guess one player is shooting the photo but there are still 2 players missing

I wondered how long before someone noticed that.

It's a two-part answer:

First, I've never been thrilled with the way that Tongiaki scales to fewer players. With lots of players, careful positioning will almost always put you on top. With less players, it's increasingly likely that your maneuvering will be suddenly irrelevant and you'll be killed off by a flat-out impossible route.

Some would argue that this randomness damages all players equally - especially since a variety of ships are lost at sea each time - but I'm not happy about it anyways.

So, I usually 'seed' Tonga at the beginning with a ships of unused colors. They don't represent a dummy player so much as they're like life preservers that a savvy player can carry around with their fleet.

It's not a perfect fix, but it's very easy and what it fixes isn't really a game-breaking problem anyways, just something that bothers me.

Second part of the answer: the game was actually over and we put random ships back on the board for color. I wasn't about to leave and find my camera while the outcome was still in doubt!

This might also be why two people seem to be taking a turn at the same time.

All my delightful subterfuge ruined! Curse you, MartinWin!

I think it's just a nice picture of two guys on the beach. The girl was obviously photoshopped in later, as there's no shadow on the sand behind her and to the right.

And to anyone who might think I'm being serious, I'm not, it's a great picture, and don't forget to read this tiny print.
