I did print out a full size copy, had it laminated, and played a game on it this past weekend. It looks great. I'm very pleased with how it turned out.
I used USGS topographic data to get all the geographic features accurate (some were modified slightly for gameplay purposes) and then played around with it in photoshop to get the style that I wanted. The original has a much much higher resolution than the picture I uploaded here so the level of detail is fantastic. You can see all sorts of features like specific rivers and mountains.
I remade the entire advanced civilization game for myself. I may upload all the other things I made here at some point.
Unfortunately you can't upload a file of more than 5MBs or so to BGG and the full resolution (300ppi) image weighs in at around 35MBs. Maybe an adim could help me out on this . . . ?
you can use a compression program like rar or tar that can create multipart archives: when creating a compressed file, they let you specify a max file size and will break up the resulting compressed file into as many parts (different files) as needed.

Apologies for the thread necro - but can you tell me more about where you got the map/topo image on which you based the map? I'm trying to make a custom civ map covering a different region.
I tried the USGS "EarthExplorer" without much luck - you seem to have found not satellite data but what we used to call a "physical map" using color to show altitude, not contour lines as in a true topo map.

The USGS website has changed since I last used it. Look for the GTOPO30 data and download the chunks of the Earth that you'll need. Then use a software like 3dem to open the data, color the elevations, and save images of the appropriate area. Finally, import the images into a software like Photoshop to merge and modify them however you want. I hope that helps.
