With Thurns und Taxis being the only Euro I've managed to get my parents to understand and enjoy, I thought I'd bring something different home this weekend. They liked it, and figured it out by the end, despite what the picture shows. :)
I love this little gem of a game! The pieces are lovely, the rules are reasonably easy to understand - but the strategy can be much deeper than you might expect. My own Mother can only barely stand to play... coughMonopolycough which is unfortunate for me, but oh well.

This is definitely one of my favourite games also. In fact, I think I may break it out right about now... Great shot! I wonder if I can get my parents to play it. Although my mom is a scrabble player, not much of a "chess" type player and Taluva is definitely very much a strategy game more akin to chess.
Thanks for all the comments! This is cool, I've never had a photo hit the front page of BGG before.
@Darren...yes, definitely a large island, my parents didn't really get the elevation part of the game, and were focused on expanding settlements rather than going vertical. I think I did a poor job of explaining that it's a race to see who can use up their pieces the fastest without burning out their supply. They also weren't very confrontational, taking out settlements and such. I find most new players I introduce the game to don't quite get that either.
@Dom...yea, I think the game can be confusing initially for some. The rules are very easy, but my parent didn't get what the "point" of the game was. They understood by the end though (heck, my Mom beat me!) so I think after a couple more rounds, they'll get the hang of it.
EDIT: For the record, my parents are big Acquire fans, so they're not really board game neophytes. They just haven't gotten much into the "new school" of games.
WOW!!!! Very nice gaming table. That pane of glass would be perfect on top of my big size Axis & Allies board. The table even got a drawer for dice and units
It reminds me of the Norman Rockwell "April Fools" painting with the older couple playing chess checkers. Did you have that in mind when you composed the shot?
