This version seems to come with a black and a brown dice. I have the newer duell version and also the En Garde rules but never mention any dice. Are they actually used in this version ?

They are used to keep the score. The dice are numbered from 0-5. A match is played till one opponent achieves 5 hits. The dice are not rolled, just used to indicate the current score.
