very cool! I'm always building stuff with the roads & houses of Catan with my friends while playing but this is so much cooler Perhaps I should buy agricola so that I can build cars too ....
Well...it can have a huge amount of down time between turns because playing the game well means planning dozens of turns ahead. If you don't, you will be slaughtered by the players that do unless you are very lucky with your draws.
It probably gets better as you play more and learn the implications of your decisions through long practice, but I lost interest in the game long before that happened.

OMG, this doesn't sound like something I want to play! Don't ruin the #1 game on boardgamegeek before I ever play it!

Well, of course you should plan ahead and there will be some downtime sometimes, but as in almost all games that have "Worker placement" as a key element there is no such thing as a sure plan you can crush the other players with, because you have to compete for the action spaces.
So I'd say the downtime mostly depends on the other players. If you have the kind in your gaminggroup who plans ahead for several turns but needs another five minutes planing time each time someone interfers with his plan, Agricola might not be the game for your group. But otherwise I think you'll be fine!

Downtime is only part of the issue. I don't want a game that encourages me to rewards me for spending copious amounts of time thinking that far in advance. If I did, I would play Chess!
Really? This photo was the root of an Agricola gripe? Really?
Geez - it's a great game, majority of gamers agree (not all, but most). There is a reason it's at the top of the BGG rankings.
Is there thinking involved? Yes, duh... would anyone here play the game if there wasn't? It has about as much thinking as a good majority of games listed on this site - much less than many, a little more than some. Overall, the downtime is very minimal - and only an issue when you have a person that over analyzes everything... but that applies to EVERY game on this site. Down time is really pretty minimal on this game.
It's funny that the small amount of gamers that don't enjoy this game make up so many of the comments. Yeah, I get it - it's an anti-establishment thing. It really makes you a better person if you find fault with things that are popular. It's 'If they're on top, they need to be knocked down... no matter what'. I get it, you say you want a revolution...
Funny photo - glad the Agricola nay-sayers had to make sure everyone knows how they feel. If you don't like the game, cool - it's been voiced over and over, we get it.
I don't like Settlers of Catan - I think I will make it my daily duty to make sure I make negative comments anytime Settlers is mentioned... surely that will stop people from enjoying it, and maybe knock it lower in the rankings... thus satisfying some hidden agenda to make sure only the games I like are the ones in the BGG Top 100. Oh the Walls of Jericho come a tumblin' down!

I totally agree! It's a great game, with little downtime (we have not experienced major downtime, and have played over forty games so far), and you do not need to think ahead as much as people are saying. Once you get used to its mechanics and score, you already have in mind what to do when it's your turn.
Ok... all my GG is gone and I don't have anything else to spend it on
Colombia is waiting for you, would you take the risk? (Video in my profile)

The story behind this photo wasn't with the game it self it was while I explain the rules to new player so the players who already knew them start making stuff like this while I finish explaining the rules to the new ones.
